Hunter Ed Classes

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is offering a basic hunter education class 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Sitka Sportsman’s Association building. Both days must be attended to complete the class.

To register, purchase a $10 study packet with workbook available at the Sitka Fish and Game office. The workbook must be completed prior to the start of class. The course is designed for students ages 11 and older.

Kettleson Library

Commission Meets

The Kettleson Memorial Library Commission is scheduled 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at the Stratton location of Kettleson Memorial Library.

Proposed Forest

Plan Discussed

 An open house is planned 5-8 p.m.  Jan. 28 at Centennial Hall on the Proposed Forest Plan Amendment and Draft Environmental Impact Statement, and the Draft Plan Monitoring Program.

The Tongass National Forest is working to complete an amendment to the Tongass Land and Resource Management Plan by August 2016.

The scope of the plan amendment is focused on accomplishing a transition to young growth management and to make renewable energy development more permissive on the Tongass. The Tongass National Forest Draft Plan Monitoring Program is available for public review and located at http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/tongass/landmanagement/planning.

Finalists for UAS

Director to Visit

Two finalists for campus director at the UAS Sitka Campus will visit Sitka next week.

The university will host “meet the candidate” events for both candidates, and invites the public to hear their presentations and ask questions.

Leslie Balsiger, J.D., Cheyenne, Wyo., will make a presentation 11:30 a.m. Jan. 26 in Room 229 of the Sitka Campus. Chris Gilmer will present at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, also in Room 229.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served both days.  The public, students, faculty and staff are invited.

 

 

Historical Society

Board to Meet

The Sitka Historical Society Board will meet noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 29 at Centennial Hall. The public is invited to attend. Call 747-6455 to be placed on the agenda.

 

Bake Sale Set for

Legion Auxiliary

American Legion Auxiliary is having a bake sale 10 a.m.-2 p.m., or until sold out, on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Wells Fargo Bank lobby.

All proceeds wil go back to the auxiliary for future projects.

 

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.

The freshmen students initiation will be Friday at the school. Dress will be respectable. ... Suspension of three days will be enforced for any of the following violations: throwing of eggs; spraying of shaving cream; cutting of hair; and any pranks which could be harmful to the welfare of the students.
