Chamber to Meet

A panel discussion on the legalization of marijuana in Sitka will be the topic of the Chamber luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.

Panel members will be: Robin Koutchak, city attorney; Police Chief Sheldon Schmitt; Scott Brylinsky, interim city planning director; and Robyn Taylor, assistant superintendent of the Sitka School District.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the discussion will begin at noon. The public is invited. For more information, call the Sitka Chamber office at 747-8604. 

 

Pioneers Meet

A regular meeting of Igloos 22 and 12 of the Pioneers of Alaska will be held Feb. 5 at Sitka Methodist Church on Kimsham Street.

Social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6, followed by a presentation and a business meeting. Valentines and warm wishes are welcome.

 

Fish and Game

Panel to Meet

The Sitka Fish and Game advisory committee will meet 6:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Sitka Sound Science Center.

On the agenda is the Board of Fisheries finfish (seine) proposals for meetings in Sitka, Feb. 23-March 3.

Sitkans to Mark

Peratrovich Day

Day February 16

The Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 invites all groups, and individuals, to march in the Elizabeth Peratrovich Day Parade on February 16. 

The line up begins at 2 p.m. at Crescent Shelter with the parade starting at 3 p.m., down Lincoln and Katlian streets to the ANB Founders Hall, where a theatrical reenactment by MEHS students will be performed.  A full schedule of events l celebrating her life is forthcoming. 

As a vitally important Alaska Native civil rights leader, who preceded Martin Luther King Jr. by 20 years, her efforts resulted in equal rights for Alaska Native peoples, through the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, making discrimination against Alaska Natives illegal in the State of Alaska. Parade organizers are asking those who would like to march on that day to call Karen at 747-7803 to be placed in the line up. 

 

 

Wearable Art

Registration Set

The seventh annual Sitka Wearable Art Show and Runway Extravaganza registration forms are now available and are due Feb. 18.

Go to www.thinkartthinksitka.com or call Jeff 747-4821 to get one. The theme is 7 Seas/Clean Seas and the dates are: March 6, dress rehearsal, and March 7 a matinee and evening show at Harrigan Centennial Hall. It is sponsored by the Greater Sitka Arts Council.

 

St. Michael’s

Parish to Meet

St. Michael’s will hold its annual meeting of the parish Sunday, Feb. 1,  after the Divine Liturgy in the church hall.

His Grace Bishop David, Bishop of the Diocese of Sitka and Alaska, will be in attendance. The topics of discussion will be a review of the past year, as well as future-needs plans for the cathedral.

All parishioners are encouraged to attend the Liturgy and the meeting.  A potluck luncheon will be held during the meeting. Those  attending may  take a favorite dish.

Early Closing at

Library on Feb. 5

Kettleson Memorial Library will be closing at 4 p.m. for regular services on Thursday, Feb. 5. The library will be open to host the Harry Potter Book Night global event.

Regular hours will resume 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. For more information, call the library at 747-8708.

 

Chinese New Year

Program at Library

Summer Shen, from the Sitka Chinese community, will offer a traditional Chinese songs and dances program for children of age’s preschool and up.

The program will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Kettleson Memorial Library. Everybody is welcome. For more information call the Library at 747-8708.

 

 

Parent Night to

Discuss Math

Sitka High math teachers Janine Jorgensen and Bobbi Jordan will host a parents night 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, in the library to discuss the SHS math 1 classes for the second semester.

Topics to be covered: math content in the second semester of math 1; the new requirements for students graduating in 2018; and the new Alaska Measures of Progress assessment students will take this spring.

 

Historical Society

To Meet in Feb.

 

The Sitka Historical Society will not hold a Board of Directors meeting in January.  Their next regularly scheduled public board meeting will be held in February.  The meeting time and date will be published in the Sentinel.

 

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.

The freshmen students initiation will be Friday at the school. Dress will be respectable. ... Suspension of three days will be enforced for any of the following violations: throwing of eggs; spraying of shaving cream; cutting of hair; and any pranks which could be harmful to the welfare of the students.
