Sitka Suffers Second Outage

By Sentinel Staff

Power went out across town for over two hours this afternoon when a tree fell on a power line on Green Lake Road, City Administrator Mark Gorman said this afternoon.

The outage began at around 2:45 p.m. and ended at 4:49 p.m. when the city fired up the 12-megawatt diesel generator. It was the second day in a row the city lost power in the afternoon but Gorman said the incidents are unrelated. Wednesday’s outage lasted around 40 minutes and was caused by a problem that occurred while switching to Blue Lake power following routine maintenance.

Today’s outage occurred while the Sentinel was preparing for the press run, resulting in a printing delay of several hours.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
