Chinese New Year

Celebration Slated

A Chinese New Year celebration will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at on the SJ Campus in Allen Hall. 

The celebration will start with the dragon dance in the hall, followed with a new drama and performances.

Tickets are on sale at the bookstore for $5 for adults, $2 for children and students, and $10 for a family.

The admission will benefit Sitka Fine Arts Camp. The celebration is sponsored by the F/V Coral Lee and SFAC.

 

Peratrovich Day

Event at Library

Kettleson Memorial Library will observe Elizabeth Peratrovich Day 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, with a screening of the PBS documentary film, “For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska,” followed by a videoconference discussion about the film and the history of civil rights in Alaska.

Attendees will meet via the Alaska OWL (Online With Libraries) network videoconferencing system with participants in Craig, Juneau, Haines, Kenai, Cordova and elsewhere around the state.

Jackie Martin, former Grand President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood, and current member of the ANS executive committee, will give a brief introduction to Elizabeth Peratrovich, her life and legacy.

Participating libraries will then break to view the documentary film, then reconnect to the videoconference for more discussion. 

The public is invited to attend.

Wearable Arts Show

The seventh annual Sitka Wearable Art Show and Runway Extravaganza registration forms are available at www.thinkartthinksitka.com or call Jeff 747 4821 to get one.

Deadline to sign up is Feb. 18.

The theme is ‘‘7 Seas/Clean Seas’’ and the dates are March 6 dress rehearsal and March 7 a matinee and evening show at Centennial Hall. It is sponsored by the Greater Sitka Arts Council.

 

Story Time Set

‘‘Who Will be My Valentine this Year?’’ by Jerry Pallotta will be one of the readings during the preschool story time program at Kettleson Library 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12.

Rhymes, songs and a craft project will be part of the preschool program. For more information, call the library at 747-8708.

 

Music Workshop

Free for Teens

A free songwriting and recording workshop is being offered at Kettleson Memorial Library in conjunction with Sitkans Against Family Violence, the Island Institute and local musicians. The first session will be 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.

Those interested can sign up at Kettleson Library or contact Anne Brice at SAFV.

Participants will identify popular songs, examine their meaning, and create new lyrics with positive messages that promote gender equality and respect.

The final project will be a zine – a self-published magazine – that will contain a compilation of thoughts on popular songs and rewritten lyrics to these songs. Participants will also have the chance to record their songs on recording equipment.

The Sitka High School baseball, softball, football and football cheerleading programs got a boost Tuesday when the School Board unanimously approved $17,000 in coaching stipends for the sports. The programs, which were started by community members and hadn’t received district funding before, will remain responsible for paying their own travel expenses.
