Juneau author Stuart Archer Cohen will have a book signing for his new novel ‘‘This is How it Really Sounds’’ 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at Old Harbor Books.

Set to Register
Sitka Community Schools will have summer camp activities June 1-July 30. Information and registration will be available May 19 at the Community Schools Office at Blatchley Middle School.
Dance Studio, SFS
To Show Ballet Film
The Sitka Film Society and Sitka Studio of Dance will screen the documentary “Ballet 422” 5 p.m. May 17 at the Downtown Coliseum Theater.
From first rehearsal to world premiere, “Ballet 422” takes the audience backstage at New York City Ballet as Justin Peck, a young up-and-coming choreographer, crafts a new work. “Ballet 422” depicts the process behind the creation of a single ballet – the 422th commissioned for the New York City Ballet – within the ongoing cycle of work at one of the world’s great ballet companies.
Moira MacDonald from the Seattle Times said the film “is filled with delicious moments, particularly for dance fans.” The Boston Globe said it is “a perfect match of form and substance.”
The film is rated PG for language. Tickets are $8 at Old Harbor Books. Those with questions may call 738-0602.
Ventures Registers
For Summer Class
The Ventures program will be open for summer hours June 8-Aug. 21. Times will be 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

‘Out of the Past’
Film at Library
Kettleson Memorial Library’s Film Noir Club will screen the classic 1947 noir “Out of the Past,” starring Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas and Jane Greer, 7 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the library.

Vessel Safety Fair
Slated for May 7
The Coast Guard will partner with AMSEA and the Coast Guard Auxiliary to host a free Vessel Safety Fair 8 a.m. May 7. The annual event will begin in Room 106 on the UAS Campus. After lunch, participants will meet in the parking lot between UAS and Mt. Edgecumbe High School.
The event will include information on recreation, charter and commercial fishing vessels. Subjects will include safety alerts; what to expect when conducting hoisting ops with a Coast Guard helicopter or when being boarded by the Coast Guard; new VHF digital selective-calling capabilities; rules for reporting maritime casualties; marijuana usage on the water; and upcoming changes to the commercial fishing vessel safety program.
Hands-on sessions will include using distress flares, controlling flooding in a damage control trainer, using fire extinguishers, and deploying life rafts. The public can take trailerable boats for a free courtesy safety examination. RSVPs are requested to 966-5454.
The schedule will be: 8 a.m. welcome and introduction; 8:10 a.m. safety alerts; 8:20 a.m. digital selective calling radio installations; 8:35 a.m. man overboard; 9 a.m. break; 9:10 a.m. marijuana use; 9:25 a.m. conducting hoisting ops with CG helo; 9:50 a.m.;10 a.m. break; 10 a.m. question and answer session; 10:20 a.m. breakout sessions; noon lunch; 1 p.m. life raft inflation, damage control wet trainer, flare demonstration, fire extinguisher use, digital selective calling radio use, dewatering pump demonstration, uninspected passenger and recreational vessel exams.

SJ Campus Sets
100 Volunteer Day
Sitka Fine Arts Camp’s 5th annual 100 Volunteer Day will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 9, on the SJ Campus.
The yearly event prepares the SJ Campus for summer. Activities will include painting, gardening, light carpentry, window washing and cleaning. Volunteers are invited to Sweetland Hall at any time throughout the day for projects and assignments across campus. Lunch will be provided by Sea Mart. All are invited.

Salmon on Tongass
Topic of Program
Ron Medel, fisheries program manager for the Tongass National Forest, will speak 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at UAS-Sitka Campus about salmon production on the Tongass.
Topics to be discussed include: how many salmon are produced from the Tongass; what is their contribution to the Alaska commercial catch; and, what is the current status of salmon on the Tongass National Forest compared to worldwide.
Mariners First Aid,
CPR Workshop On
The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will conduct a first aid and CPR workshop designed for commercial fishermen and other mariners 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, May 11, at the Sitka Sound Science Center.
Instructor Eric Van Cise will cover: CPR and automatic external defibrillators; treatment of choking; medical emergencies; trauma; environmental hazards; patient assessment; medical communications; drowning and hypothermia; and common fishing injuries.
Attendees will receive a U.S. Coast Guard-accepted, two-year certificate issued by the American Safety and Health Institute.

Injury Prevention
Workshop on Tap
AMSEA will conduct a free injury prevention workshop 5-6:30 p.m. Monday, May 11, at the Sitka Sound Science Center.
The workshop title is “Strains, Sprains and Pains: Ergonomic Injury Prevention for Commercial Fishermen.” Participants will learn about ways to avoid musculoskeletal problems common in commercial fishing and share ideas on ergonomic changes that fishermen have made on their vessels. Fishermen may take a mat to practice some exercises to “tune up” their bodies before, during and after the season.

Beginner Boating
Class on May 18
The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will conduct a Recreational Boating for Beginners workshop 6-8:30 p.m. May 18-June 6.
The workshop will consist of six evening classes of hands-on, shore-based training, and will conclude with an on-the-water training session. Class locations will vary depending on the evening’s topic. The time and location of the on-the-water training session will be announced in class.
Pre-trip planning will be covered on May 18; the boating environment on May 20; emergency procedures on May 26 and 28; engine maintenance and trouble-shooting (with mechanic Gary Denherder) on June 1; and boating skills on June 3.
Skills learned in the classroom will be practiced on the water, aboard the personal boats of students on June 6. The cost for the workshop is $140.
AMSEA instructor Mike Morris will teach the workshop. In addition to his work for AMSEA, Morris is the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District 17 staff officer for public education.

Drill Conductor
Workshop Set
The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a 12-hour fishing vessel drill conductor workshop in Sitka 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, and 8 a.m.-noon Thursday, May 21, at the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.
Commercial fishermen and other mariners can get hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea.
It will cover cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs; helicopter rescue; life rafts; abandon-ship procedures; and emergency drills.
Drill conductor workshops meet the training requirements for documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. The workshop is offered to commercial fishermen at no cost, with support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Velma Baines, 90
Velma Baines, 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep while surrounded by family at SEARHC-Mt Edgecumbe Hospital after a lengthy illness.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Presbyterian Church with graveside service following at Sitka National Cemetery. Velma will be laid to rest with Conrad Baines Sr. Conrad was a World War II US Army veteran.
Chamber to Meet

The speaker will be Ron Medel, fisheries program manager with the U.S. Forest Service. His topic will be “Salmon Production from the Tongass National Forest.”

The annual Fishermen’s Flea Market will be held 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 9, at the Mt. Edgecumbe High School/UAS Campus parking lots.

Sitka Trail Works
Guided Hike May 9
Sitka Trail Works will host its first free guided hike of the season 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Sitka High School entrance to the Cross Trail.
Hikers will learn about geocaching.
‘‘Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure-hunting game using GPS-enabled devices,’’ Sitka Trail Works said. ‘‘Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.’’

The total hike distance is less than two miles with frequent stops to explore and learn. Hikers should take a GPS device or smartphone; however, a GPS device is not required to learn about geocaching and to enjoy the hike.
