Panel Discussion On

The presentation ‘‘Your City Services and Municipal Government: Where are We Going and How are We Going to Get There?’’ is scheduled 6-7:30 p.m.  Wednesday, May 13, at the Centennial Hall Maksoutoff Room

Panelists are Roger Hames, Lisa Busch, Steve Reifenstuhl, Gary Paxton and Rachel Roy.

Short panelists’ statements will be followed by interactive exchange with the audience moderated by Thad Poulson. The public is invited to attend.

SCVB to Meet

The Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau board of directors will hold a work session 4 p.m. Sunday, May 10,  at 303 Lincoln Street, Suite 4.

Guided Bird

Walks Listed

Free guided bird walks are being held at Sitka National Historical Park each Saturday morning in May for those wanting to learn about the migrant and resident bird species of the park.

Spring migration bird walks will be held 8-10 a.m. May 9, 16, 23 and 30. The free walks are open to beginner and experienced bird watchers and will offer participants the chance to identify and learn about the abundant bird species that depend on the park’s coastal and rain forest ecosystems.

Participants are being encouraged to dress warmly and to be prepared to spend two hours outside in variable weather conditions. Attendees who have binoculars should take them. Aa limited number will be available. Field guides will be provided.

Salmon Derby

Tickets on Sale

Entry tickets for the 60th annual Sitka Salmon Derby are now being sold at Orion Sporting Goods and Murray Pacific Supply.

Ticket prices are $15 for one day, $20 two days, $25 three days, $30 four days, and $35 five days. A five-day family ticket costing $65 covers only the parents and their children age 6 through 15.

The businesses named above also sell $30 annual memberships to Sitka Sportsman’s Association which qualify for $500 to the Association member entering the largest king each of the five days of the derby, May 23-24-25, and the following weekend, May 30-31. A lifetime membership in SSA is $200.

Anyone who complies with the rules of the derby and is past their sixth birthday is eligible to compete. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. All contestants, except those exempted and children under age 16, must have a valid Alaska sport fishing license and king salmon stamp. All anglers are being urged to read new regulations published by Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Derby booklets with printed rules and a partial listing of donated prizes will soon be available at other Sitka businesses as well as Murray Pacific Supply and Orion Sporting Goods. Added valuable prizes will be publicized as the derby nears.

Sitka Cirque Set

Sunday at Hames

Sitka Cirque will be 7 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at the Hames Center.

The premier show will highlight the aerial silks and gymnastics programs at the Hames Center. Joining the group of local performers will be guest artist Cheetah Platt, a former Cirque de Soleil performer. Tickets are on sale at Hames Center and Old Harbor Books.
