Set to Read

Haines author Heather Lende will read from her new book, “Find the Good,” at Old Harbor Books 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7. 

Lende also wrote “If You Lived Here I’d Know Your Name.”

 

 

TAP Training Set

A Training for Alcohol Professionals class will be 9 a.m. May 8 at the Westmark Sitka banquet room.

The class fulfills the state education course requirement for servers and sellers of beverage alcohol. Students must be at least 21 years old and have valid identification. The cost is $45.

Those who have a card less than 6 months’ expired may take the test without taking the class. The existing card and valid ID is needed, and the cost is $45. Call Helen at 738-6738 with questions.

 

National Park

Accepting Apps

Sitka National Historical Park is accepting applications for both park guide and park guide-student trainee positions for the summer 2015 season. The temporary appointments are expected to last from approximately mid-June through the end of September. 

Application packets are available on the door at 103 Monastery Street, or by contacting the park at 747-0107. All applications must be postmarked or received by May 15.

 

Farmers Market

Vendors to Meet

The Sitka Local Foods Network will host a meeting for prospective and past vendors of the Sitka Farmers Market 5:45-7:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the See House behind St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church on Lincoln Street.

This is the eighth year of operation for the Sitka Farmers Market, which features six markets 10 a.m.-1 p.m. every other Saturday from July through September at the ANB Founders Hall. This year’s dates are July 4, 18, Aug. 1, 15, 29 and Sept. 12. The Sitka Farmers Market was a community health initiative from the 2008 Sitka Health Summit.

The farmers markets feature booths from local farmers and gardeners, local fishermen, local bakers, and local artisans and craftspeople. The emphasis is on local products from Sitka and Southeast Alaska. The farmers markets also are great Sitka gathering places.

Sitka Emblem Club will hold its business meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.

Nominations for second assistant marshal and recording secretary will be held. 

 

Sitkan Named

National Merit

Award Winner

Sitka High senior Kaya J. Duguay has been named a National Merit $2,500 scholarship winnerby the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Evanston, Illinois.

The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists. Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

Scholars were selected on their academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.

 

Alaska Airlines

Donates Prize

To Salmon Derby

   Named official airline of the 60th annual Sitka Salmon Derby, Alaska Airlines has continued its long local involvement by again donating toward the top prize this year. 

     In providing the donation to Sitka Sportsman’s Association, Tim Thompson, manager of public affairs for Alaska Airlines, said, “One of our important business objectives is to support worthy causes within the communities we serve.”

Marketing personnel Scott Habberstad and KC Hostetler assisted in the award.

The two round-trip system-wide first class vouchers are unrestricted for Alaska Air and/or Horizon Air, and are valued at $1,450 each.

For its 60th annual derby to be held the weekends of May 23-24-25 and May 30-31, Sitka Sportsman’s Association will award $7,500 for the largest king salmon entered.

Other prizes for the derby continue to be received from organizations, businesses, and individuals.  Those who have not already sent their prize pledges of merchandise, services or cash are reminded to phone Derby Chairman John McCrehin at 738-8636, SSA President Steve Ramp at 738-7267, or prize coordinator Elaine Strelow at 747-3469.

 

Fourth-Graders

Perform May 8

The 4th Music Movers will hold a demonstration night 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Keet Gooshi Heen multipurpose room.

The group will show singing games and dances. Admission is free and open to the public.

Set to Perform

The fifth-grade band Hello Summer concert will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the Performing Arts Center.  Admission is free and open to the public. 

 

Sitka Spectrum

Sets Meetings

The  LGBTQ group (now known as Sitka Spectrum) meets on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Meetings this month will be 2-3:30 p.m. May 10 and 24 at Pacific Hgh School.

CCTHITA, STA

Recruiting Youths

Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska and Sitka Tribe of Alaska are currently recruiting eligible tribal youths between the ages of 14-21 to participate in a Summer Youth Employment and Training Program.

Those looking for job training who meet eligibility requirements may become part of a 44-day program June 1 though July. Space is limited. The deadline to apply is May 15.  For applications or to ask for more information  contact STA at 747-7178.

Youth Advocates of Sitka’s board of directors will meet 5:15-7 p.m. Monday, May 11, at YAS’ss 805 Lincoln Street office. It is open to the public.

Kappa Gamma Iota Chapter will  celebrate Founders Day with a brunch 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Sandra Fontaine’s residence.

 

Adults Sought

For Spelling Bee

The annual Sitka Adult Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Friends of Kettleson Memorial Library, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 24, at the library.

The fee is $20 per contestant, and contestants can compete alone or as a team with one other person. All funds go to the Friends of the Library. Sign up at Kettleson Memorial Library, or call 747-8708. Admission is free for spectators.

 

Awards Assembly

Set at Sitka High

Sitka High School will host the annual Awards Assembly 2 p.m. Monday, May 11, at the Performing Arts Center.

Individuals and organizations who wish to present a scholarship at the assembly are asked to contact the SHS registrar at 966-1905 as soon as possible.

Summer Hours

At SJ Museum

Official summer hours at the Sheldon Jackson Museum will start Sunday, May 10. Summer hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m .daily.

The museum will be closed on Memorial Day, May 25, Independence Day on July 4, and Labor Day on Sept. 7.

General admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and those visitors 18 and younger.

Friends of the Sheldon Jackson Museum, and those with passes, are admitted free. Call 747-8981 with questions.

 

Host Families

Sought by AFS

AFS Sitka is seeking two more host families for the next school year.

This year, four families are hosting high school students from Albania, Modova, Bangladesh and Russia. Next year’s AFS high school exchange students arrive in August 2015 and stay until the end of the school year.

AFS in Sitka has a long history, and provides advice and support to hosting families.

Games of Week

Offered to Youths

Games of the week, including swimming when available, is being offered Saturdays May 9-June 27 at Blatchley Middle School.

Activities are for boys and girls in grades 3-5 from 10 a.m. to noon and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for Grades 6-8.

Activities are swimming, kick ball, dodge ball, wiffle ball, 3x3 basketball, 3x3 soccer, free play and wacky races.

The cost is $65 and the instructor is Andy Lee. Registration is open at Sitka Community Schools.

 

Women’s Book

Group to Meet

The Women’s Book Group will meet to discuss ‘‘A Hundred Flowers’’ by Gail Tsukiyama at the Pioneers Home chapel 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 12.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.

Suspension of three days will be enforced for any of the following violations: throwing of eggs; spraying of shaving cream; cutting of hair; and any pranks which could be harmful to the welfare of the students.
