Conversations
With Artists Set
The Sitka Fine Arts Camp and the Greater Sitka Arts Council will present the Conversations with Artists series, a presentation and discussion about art. The first program will be 6:30 p.m. May 21 at the Yaw Art Center on the Sheldon Jackson Campus.
Conversations will be with folk artist Cara Murray, mixed media artist Chad Vickery and poet and gallery owner Eugene Solovyov.
Arts Council Meets
The Greater Sitka Arts Council annual meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, in the Yaw Building, Room 108.

Music in Poetry
Concert on Tap
Kettleson Memorial Library will host “Music in Poetry: Where Words and Music Meet,” a free concert by Primal Mates, a chamber jazz duo from Portland, Oregon, 4 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Kettleson Memorial Library.
Featuring Chris Lee on vibes and percussion and Colleen O’Brien’s voice and cello work, the concert will be devoted to a melding of literature and sound, with poems that have been set to music, music that has been set to poems, and music by some well-known writers who were also accomplished composers.

Guided Walks
To Begin at Park
Sitka National Historical Park will offer daily guided programs throughout the summer teaching visitors about the park’s natural and cultural resources.
The Battle Walk returns to the battleground and former fort site of the Tlingit-Russian Battle of 1804, which was pivotal in determining the history of the Alaska region. The guided walk is approximately three-quarters of a mile, and lasts about 45 minutes to one hour.
Stories and legends of the totem poles on the Totem Loop Trail, focusing on the common totem figures, the origins of the 1903 John Brady collection, carving methods, and the native culture of Southeast Alaska are included in the Totem Walk. It is approximately one mile, and lasts about one hour.
The Sea Otter Discovery Talk teaches visitors about the ecological, cultural and historical importance of sea otters and how they are adapted to their ocean environment. The talk lasts about 15 minutes.
Visitors learn how to identify migrant and resident bird species that are found in the park during the Spring Migration Bird Walk. The walk lasts about two hours.

All ranger-led tours meet at the Sitka NHP visitor center on Lincoln Street.

SSF Home-Brew
Contest on Hold
The Sitka Seafood Festival Home Brew Contest scheduled for June 6 has been postponed due to the U.S. Coast Guard Gazebo being unavailable.
The festival will announce when a date and venue are scheduled.
Marine Mammal
Panel Set to Meet
The Sitka Marine Mammal Commission will meet 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, in the STA Resource Protection Department office, 429 Katlian Street. The public is invited to attend.

Sea Lion Cove
Cruise May 24
The Annual Sitka Trail Works and Allen Marine Sea Lion Cove hike is scheduled Sunday, May 24.
The hike is across northern Kruzof Island. It is a 2.5-mile hike up to and along a lake, then down to the outer coast (a 1-mile-long sandy beach). Seats are still available.
The boat will depart Crescent Harbor at 6:30 a.m. and depart Kalinin Bay at 4:30 p.m, with an arrival time back to Crescent Harbor at approximately 6 p.m. Cost for a hike ticket is $100. To make reservations, have a credit card handy and call 747-7244.
Easter Group
Meets May 22
The Easter Group will meet 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, at St. Peter’s See House.
The meeting is a continuation of the annual meeting and will include election of officers. The public is invited to attend. Contact Julia Smith, 738-6336, for further information.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
