Chamber to Meet

Garry White of the Sitka Economic Development Association will speak at the Chamber of Commerce lumcheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.

The public is invited.

Free Screening Set for

Functional Movement

Active individuals who are pain free may get a free functional movement screening at the Hames Center.

The screen identifies asymmetries and limitations when performing seven fundamental movement patterns that are key to functional movement quality. 

The movement screen can identify abnormal movement patterns which could cause future pain and impaired functional mobility.

To schedule an appointment call Gio Villanueva, PT, DPT, ATC, clinic director, Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital Physical Therapy Department, at 966-8576. The 2015-2016 Silver Saver card holders have priority followed by Hames Center members as appointment times become available.

Trailhead Gets Parking Area

The Baranof Street trailhead to the lower Gavan trail has been rebuilt and now can accommodate parking for five vehicles. 

The renovation was done by Troy’s Excavation as employees of Sitka Trail Works. Work was completed May 14 and paid for by a Federal Lands Access Program grant to the city. 

The trailhead renovation and other improvements to the lower Gavan trail were done in conjunction with a larger project to make the Cross Trail multi-use trail extend to Baranof Street and eventually replace the lower Gavan boardwalk trail. That trail will remain in use through August.

The public should take note that the new gravel trail being constructed to the east of the old boardwalk is not yet complete for through traffic to the Cross Trail, or to Pherson Street. Trail users are asked to use caution while the trail is under construction.

Gary’s Outboard

Supports Derby

Gary’s Outboard has pledged a 6’7” Mercury Inflatable plus 2.5 horsepower Mercury outboard motor, total value $2,000, as a prize for the 60th annual Sitka Salmon Derby planned for weekends of May 23-24-25 and May 30-31.

Sitka Sportsman’s Association thanks its long-time supporters such as Gary Denherder for their continued interest. 

  Donations of prizes, large and small, to be awarded to successful anglers for derby kings can still be added to the donor listings and other publicity. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals are asked to phone John McCrehin at 738-8636 or Steve Ramp at 738-7267 or Elaine Strelow at 747-3469.

Derby entry tickets are being sold at Murray Pacific Supply and at Orion Sporting Goods where derby rules and information are also available.

Shee Atika Inc.

Elects Directors,

Board Officers

Dr. Kenneth Cameron, Gillian Havrilla and Lori Stedman were elected directors at the 41st annual meeting of Shee Atiká Incorporated shareholders, held Saturday, May 16. Each will serve a three-year term.

Following the meeting, the directors elected Cameron president/CEO and chairman; Dr. Pamela Steffes vice-chairman; Joshua Horan secretary; and Faleene Worrell, treasurer.

Shee Atiká is the corporation established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act for the Alaska Natives historically residing in and around Sitka.

Raven Board Meets

Nutrition Talk

Set for Tonight

Hames Center will host a free nutrition talk 7 p.m. tonight at the Hames Center.

SEARHC’s dietitian Jessica Holland will offer her knowledge on ‘‘Fats and Dairy.’’ Holland will discuss how much people should consume and what types are best.

SAFV Board Meets

Panel to Meet

The Sitka Marine Mammal Commission will meet 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the Resource Protection Department office, 429 Katlian Street. The public is invited to attend.
