‘Criminal Profiling’

Topic of Meeting

Kettleson Memorial Library will present “Criminal Profiling: Exploring the Role of Forensic Science and Crime Scene Investigation in the Legal System,” with forensic scientist and criminal profiler Brent E. Turvey, PhD, 7 p.m. Monday, June 8, at Kettleson Memorial Library. 

Some of the material in the program is not suitable for children, the library said.

Film Noir Club

To Screen Movie

The Kettleson Film Noir Club will screen the 1954 noir, “Cry Vengeance” – which was filmed on location in Ketchikan – 7 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the library.

Those who haven’t already joined the club can register in person at the library, or call the library at 747-8708. Registration is required. Refreshments will be provided.

SAIL’s Community

Picnic Set June 6

Southeast Alaska Independent Living invites the public to a community picnic 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the main shelter of Halibut Point Recreation Area.

SAIL will provide the fish, burgers, dogs and drinks. Attendees are asked to take a dish to share if possible.

Reception June 5

For First Friday

The public is invited to help name the giant prehistoric dragonfly replica created by Keith Gibson and friends at a reception 5-8 p.m. June 5 at the Island Artists Cooperative.

All are invited to design a small wire-wrapped dragonfly of their own. 

The event is being held in conjunction with Sitka’s First Friday events. 

Light refreshments will be offered.

SAIL invites Sitkans age 60 and older to a paddle to the Causeway World War II bunkers 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, June 3. SAIL provides all gear. Invasive Tunicate

Meeting May 28

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be working with Smithsonian Environmental Research Center staff to begin investigating feasibility of controlling the invasive tunicate, Didemnum vexillum, in Whiting Harbor this summer.

A public meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Sitka Sound Science Center. The meeting was originally advertised for a different date.

Benefit Open Mic

Slated May 31

Sitka Folk will host a benefit open mic at the Larkspur Cafe Sunday, May 31. Sign up is at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Call Ted at 747-5482 with questions.

Target Weights

Derby Incentives

Sitka Sportsman’s Association has announced the computer-drawn hidden weight targets for the incentive prizes of $500 each funded by Samson Tug & Barge for the first three days of the 60th Annual Sitka Salmon Derby.

Targets are 32 pounds for Saturday, May 23; 34 pounds for Sunday, May 24; and 23.3 pounds for Monday, May 25. Those who entered derby fish are asked to check their weights on the respective days, adding or subtracting one, two or three fish to come close to the target weight. Winners for each day will be determined by the closest number to the target weight, either over or under, and announced on awards night, June 11.

Contest entry forms and instructions will again be available on May 30 at ticket validation and at Crescent Harbor derby barge. Target weights for that weekend will be announced after Derby close on May 31.

BMS Drill Team

Camp Discussed

Blatchley Middle School will hold a drill team camp planning meeting noon Thursday, June 4, in the BMS commons.

The group will discuss interest, fundraising and the planning of enlisting a dance/choreographer.

The coach is a former UDA instructor, and current competition team coach in California. For more information call Sherry at 738-1038.

Youth Outdoor

Soccer to Run

Registrations are being taken for youth outdoor soccer through the Sitka Community School program.

The program for ages 4 through high school runs July 11-Sept. 12. The cost is $65 plus $20 for shin guards, which are required.
