Injury Prevention

Workshop on Tap

AMSEA will conduct a free injury prevention workshop 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at Centennial Hall.

The workshop title is “Strains, Sprains and Pains: Ergonomic Injury Prevention for Commercial Fishermen.” Participants will learn about ways to avoid musculoskeletal problems common in commercial fishing and share ideas on ergonomic changes that fishermen have made on their vessels. Fishermen may take a mat to practice some exercises to “tune up” their bodies before, during and after the season.

Fish and Chips

Benefit on Tap

A fish and chips fundraiser and auction at the Sitka Elks Lodge 5-8 p.m. Sunday, May 31, will benefit Charles “Chaz” Estes and family.

The cost will be $15 a basket. All Elks and invited guests are welcome.

Chamber Golf

Tourney June 28

The eighth annual Sitka Chamber golf tournament will be held 7 a.m.-2 p.m. June 28 at the Sea Mountain Golf Course.

Registration includes 18 holes of golf, admission to the awards lunch and chances to win prizes, including $25,000 for a hole-in-one. Registration opens at 7 a.m., the tournament starts at 8 a.m.

Senior Hike Set

Sitkans age 60 and older are  invited to join SAIL’s monthly hiking club Wednesday, June 24. The group will be led by Dave Nuetzel, who will guide using compasses and maps off a trail. 

Transportation from the Swan Lake Senior Center will be provided at 9:15 a.m., and returning by 11:30 a.m. Trekking poles, yaktraks, water and snacks are provided. Hiking location will be annoucned. The cost of activity is $5.

Derby Reminders for

Commercial Vessels

Commercial fishing vessels are being encouraged to participate in the Sitka Salmon Derby, but there are a couple restrictions, Sitka Sportsman’s Association said.

First, to be fair to all derby participants, trolling poles must be in the stowed, upright position and stabilizers may not be used. Fish and Game regulations include two additional rules; traditional rods and reels must be used with a device that releases the line from the trolling weight when a fish is hooked and commercial salmon vessels fishing in areas currently closed to commercial fishing must cut the dorsal fin off of all salmon immediately after landing them.

Sitka Sound Seafoods requests that just the fin be removed, leaving the fish’s flesh intact.

Bike Ride Set

On Kruzof Island

Allen Marine and Sitka Trail Works will offer a Kruzof bike ride and play day on Sunday, June 7.

All are invited to take a bike (and helmet) aboard an Allen Marine boat and bike across Kruzof Island, which is approximately 7 miles from Mud Bay to Shelikof. Riders can choose how far to bike.

The boat will depart Crescent Harbor at 7:30 a.m. and depart Mud Bay at 5:30 p.m., arriving back to Crescent Harbor at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Cost for a ticket is $65. To make reservations have a credit card handy and call 747-7244. 

Park Board Meets

The Sitka State Park Advisory Board will meet 7:30 a.m. June 9 at Centennial Hall. The public is invited.

Sitka Karate

Academy on Tap

Sitka Karate Academy instructor Sensei Josh Stevens will offer classes Mondays and Thursdays, June 8-July 2 at Blatchley Middle School.

Children 6 and older will meet 5:45 p.m.-6:45 p.m. Adults and high school students will meet 7-8 p.m. The cost is $75. Registration is open at the Community Schools office.

Sportsman’s Group

Hosts Range Course

A range officer training course will be held at the Sitka Sportsman’s Association range 12:30-4 p.m. Sunday, June 28.

‘Sitka’s Brand’

Panel to Meet

Sitka’s Brand steering committee will meet 7 p.m. tonight in the Centennial Hall Rousseau Room.

Over the last six months, the committee has been working in collaboration with facilitators from Great Destination Strategies to define Sitka’s unique destination identity or “brand.” This has included individual and group interviews, surveys, research review, creating potential brand directions, focus groups, and selection of a final direction with visual imagery to support the brand. 

The meeting will include refreshments, a review of the process, explanation of the benefits of destination branding to the visitor industry and community, results of the brand research, revealing the logo and tagline that will be used to convey Sitka as a visitor destination, and discussion on how to forward.

Drill Conductor

Workshop Set

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a 10-hour fishing vessel drill conductor workshop  8 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 16.

The workshop will be conducted at the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association. Commercial fishermen and other mariners gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea.

It covers: cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills. 

Drill conductor workshops meet the training requirements for documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. The workshop is offered to commercial fishermen at no cost, with support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. It is free to commercial fishermen; $175 to others.

First Aid, CPR

Workshop Set

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will conduct a first aid and CPR workshop designed for commercial fishermen and other mariners in Sitka 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, at Centennial Hall.

Instructor Eric Van Cise will cover CPR and automatic external defibrillators, treatment of choking, medical emergencies, trauma, environmental hazards, patient assessment, medical communications, drowning and hypothermia, and common fishing injuries.

Attendees will receive a U.S. Coast Guard accepted, two-year certificate issued by the American Safety and Health Institute. The cost for the workshop is $95. Register online at www.amsea.org or call 747-3287.

On Dean’s List

Crystal Duncan was named to the dean’s list at Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colo., for the spring 2015 semester. Duncan’s major is business administration.

To be eligible, a student must carry a semester GPA of 3.6 or better in no fewer than 15 credit hours of graded college level work and have completed all work for which they are registered by the end of the semester.

STA Health

Panel to Meet

The STA Health Committee will meet noon-1 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the STA social services building, 110 American Street.

Sacred Harp Sing

Set for Sunday

The 5th Sunday Sitka Sacred Harp Sing will be 3:30-5 p.m. May 31 at the Pioneers Home Chapel.

Focus will be on the Cooper Book, which will be sung on the Pioneers Home porch, weather permitting.

Softball Camp Set

A girls softball skills camp will be held 9 a.m.-noon June 1 and 2 at Moller Field for ages 6-13.
