Library Resumes

Business Hours

Kettleson Memorial Library technology upgrades moved faster than anticipated, and is now part of Alaska’s Joint Library Consortium.

The move allows Sitka’s library patrons to check out materials from more than 20 Alaskan libraries. Those materials, as well full list of consortium libraries, can be found on the new electronic catalog accessible from the Kettleson website.

As things continue to be implemented, the library is open today until 5 p.m., with regular hours resuming on Saturday, June 20.

To Adjust Policies

Kettleson Memorial Library will be adjusting policies in conjunction with joining the Alaska’s Joint Library Consortium.

Patrons with regular accounts in good standing will now be allowed to check out up to a total of 50 items. Video checkouts will be limited to 10 titles at one time.

Sitka National Historical Park to Host T-Shirt Signing with Artist

Sitka National Historical Park will host a T-shirt signing and discussion with the creator of this year’s winning T-shirt design, Robert Davis Hoffmann, 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Sitka National Historical Park Visitor Center.

Hoffmann is a designer, woodcarver and painter, from Kake. He began his education in Tlingit design by watching his father carve, and uses his designs to cover both traditional and modern themes. Of this year’s design, Hoffmann says: 

“The (park) wanted a design that could be associated with the park, and what immediately came to mind was the historical significance of Indian River, in particular the salmon spawning that many visitors delight in on the famous park walk along the Totem Trail,’’ Hoffmann said.

He said the design shows a salmon spawning, and the traditional design form used for the eggs easily represented embryo stages. The tails and fins floating separately represent salmon that have spawned and their deteriorating bodies return to the estuaries and the life cycles.

The geometric ‘‘dividers’’ on top and bottom represent the riverbed and the water surface – the divisions between “worlds,” he said.

The T-shirts, which were produced in conjunction with the park’s cooperating association, Alaska Geographic, range in size from S to XXXL, and are available for purchase at the visitor center. Sizes S-XL cost $19.95. Sizes XXL and XXXL cost $24.95. For more information about this event, call the visitor center at 747-0110.

Community

Picnic July 18 

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska community picnic will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 18, on the Baranof Elementary School grounds.

The menu includes picnic and barbecue fare as well as traditional Native food, and guests are being encouraged to tale picnic side dishes to share. Games and races will be held, and the popular fillet contest is back, STA said.

All are invited to take advantage of the free transportation provided through “the RIDE” from many convenient locations throughout Sitka. The schedule for transportation will be posted in town, and available on the STA website:  www.sitkatribe.org.  

This is a no-smoking event open to the community. Those with questions may contact STA staff at 747-3207.

Iowans Volunteer

At Sitka Lutheran

Bob and Barb Ericson, Cedar Falls, Iowa, will coordinate the Sitka Lutheran Church volunteer program in July and August.

They will be helping to explain Sitka Lutheran Church’s 175 years of service to the community.

Bob Ericson is a retired Lutheran pastor who has served congregations in New York, Illinois, Minnesota and Iowa. He has taught at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and presently shares preaching and teaching responsibilities with another pastor in Waterloo, Iowa.

Barb Ericson recently retired from nursing. She has taught at Wagner College on Staten Island, N.Y., worked in hospitals, served as a school nurse and as a clinic nurse at the University of Minnesota Pediatric Specialties Clinic. She also has administered several nursing programs.

Both have been involved for 26 years in medical mission work in Jamaica. Barb continues to organize and lead mission teams of about 60 to Jamaica annually. Teams include doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and construction workers on an annual two-week project.

Bob serves as chaplain for the group. They both have been involved in other international projects.

Sitkans and summer visitors are invited to 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service. A soup supper is 6 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a short prayer service. Messy Church is a special activity-oriented monthly worship experience that features a full meal, activities for the kids and informal worship.

Historian to Speak

Via Videoconference

Historian Ross Coen will talk about his new book, “Fu-Go: The Curious History of Japan’s Balloon Bomb Attack on America,” via the Alaska OWL video conferencing network noon Tuesday, June 23, at Kettleson Memorial Library.

Near the end of World War II, Japan launched its fu-go campaign, sending balloon bombs across the Pacific to the west coast of North America. Coen will discuss the history of this little-known episode in U.S. history.

Health Survey

The Sitka MAPP Community Health Assessment is asking Sitkans to fill out the ‘‘Sitka Quality of Life’’ survey.

Those who include contact information will be entered into a drawing for a $100 cash prize. The survey will help the assessment team – a group of Sitkans representing a wide range of organizations – craft health improvement priorities that address the community’s needs and concerns.

SSF Banquet Set

The 6th annual Sitka Seafood Festival will have a line-up of guest chefs, events and the banquet dinner at Allen Hall on Aug. 7. 

Tickets for the dinner go on sale starting July 1, and are available online at sitkaseafoodfestival.org

This year ticket-holders can pick seats by looking at the dining map online. Tickets are also available for the VIP cocktail event.

CG Unit to Host

Meet for Trollers,

Charter OperatorsThe Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Detachment in Sitka will host an open forum meeting for people involved in the commercial salmon troller and charter vessel fisheries 7-8 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at Centennial Hall.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss conflicts between the two groups that occurred in the vicinity of Cape Edgecumbe last summer. The goal of the meeting is to identify the causes of past problems in an effort to prevent them from occurring in the future, the Coast Guard said.

MSD personnel will facilitate the session and will offer information on regulations governing anchoring, lookouts, and general mariner responsibilities to prevent collisions.

Nobeltec Tech

Support to Visit

The head tech support staff from Nobletec will be in Sitka next week.

An advanced class is planned 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at NSRAA.

On Wednesday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., will be an open house at Alaska Computer Center.

Nobeltec installation and trouble-shooting will be available by appointment on Thursday and again Friday by calling Terry at 360-969-0780.

Also on Thursday, a beginner’s class will be 5:30 p.m. at NSRAA

‘Tracing Roots’

Screening July 1

The public is invited to take brown bag lunches to a screening of ‘‘Tracing Roots: A Weaver’s Journey’’ noon-1 p.m. July 1 in the Pioneers Home Chapel.

Delores Churchill and the filmmaker Ellen Frankenstein will be on hand to talk after the screening. The 35-minute film travels with Delores across borders and communities on a heartfelt journey to uncover the history and meaning of the woven spruce root hat found with Kwäday Dän Ts’ìnchi, also known as the Long Ago Person Found, in a retreating glacier in Northern Canada.
