SCS Schedules

Boat Cruise

The Sitka Conservation Society will hold an Intertidal Life Boat Cruise 8:30 a.m.-noon Sunday, July 5. Participants will travel to Frosty Reef to learn more about crabs, sea anemones, sea cucumbers, sea stars, and other intertidal creatures.

Biologist Marnie Chapman and Paul Norwood will accompany the group. Participants should wear boots for rough and slippery terrain and pack an extra layer in case the weather is cold. Participants will have the option of staying on board the boat while the group explores Frosty Reef.

Boarding is at 8:15 a.m. at Crescent Harbor. Hot drinks and binoculars are provided and snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets are available at Old Harbor Books for $55. United Way Grants

Applications Ready

United Way of Southeast Alaska is now accepting Community Impact Grant applications. Up to $30,000 in Community Impact funds will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate community needs that pertain to health, education, or income stability. 

The criteria used include: collaboration, matching funds, and having a clearly stated, focused, and achievable goal with measurable outcomes.  Funds may not exceed $3,500 for any individual award.

Grant applications are available on United Way of Southeast Alaska’s website at http://www.unitedwayseak.org/content/2015-community-impact-grants-0.

All applications are welcome and are preferred to be submitted electronically to the United Way office no later than 4 p.m. July 31, 2015. Dancers Set To

Perform July 4

The Sitka Spruce Celtic Dancers will have a free performance 11 a.m. July 4, at the Crescent Harbor Shelter. 

At noon, Fishing for Cats will host a free Contra Dance.  All dances are taught, and a partner isn’t needed.

Sportsman’s Association Hosts Range Officer Course

Sets Range Training

A Range Officer Training course will be held at the Sitka Sportsman’s Association from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 27.  The free course is designed to qualify current and joining members of the association who desire to volunteer their time to run both the indoor and outdoor ranges.
