AMSEA Sets

Workshop for

Fishermen

Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) will offer a 10-hour Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, June 27.  The free workshop will be conducted at the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (NSRAA), 1308 Sawmill Creek Road. This workshop is for commercial fishermen and other mariners to gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea.  

This workshop covers cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares, and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills. 

AMSEA’s Drill Conductor workshops meet the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line.

This workshop is offered to commercial fishermen at no cost, with support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community & Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health.  The cost is $175 for all others.  Register online at www.amsea.org or call (907) 747-3287.

Kayaking Event

SAIL invites Sitkans with disabilities and those age 60 and older for a paddle around Silver Bay 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, July 10. The activity costs $25. SAIL provides all kayaks and gear.

Senior Hiking Set

Sitkans age 60 and older are invited to attend SAIL’s monthly hiking club 9:15 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30. Transportation from the Swan Lake Senior Center will be provided. Trekking poles, water, and snacks are also provided. The location will be announced later. Cost for this activity is $5. Documentary

Screening Set

The public is invited to bring a brown bag lunch to a screening of ‘‘Tracing Roots:A Weaver’s Journey’’ noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, in the Pioneer Home Chapel, 120 Katlian St. Delores Churchill and filmmaker, Ellen Frankenstein, will give a talk after the screening.

The 35-minute film follows Churchill across borders and communities on a journey to uncover the history and meaning of the woven spruce root hat found with Kwäday Dän Ts’ìnchi, also known as the Long Ago Person Found, in a retreating glacier in Northern Canada.

Class of ’95

Sets Reunion

Sitka High School class of 1995 will have its 20th class reunion July 3 - 5. 

The reunion will start with a dinner at the Sea Mountain Golf Course and Restaurant at 6 p.m.  Friday, July 3.

On Saturday July 4, class members who wish to participate in the parade should meet on Lake Street at 1 p.m.  

At 3 p.m. there will be a class tour of Sitka High School.

 At 7:30 p.m. class members will meet at the Pioneer Bar.

On Sunday, July 5, there will be a wildlife tour at 11:00 a.m. Those taking the tour should meet at Crescent Harbor by 10:30 a.m. 

The reunion will end Sunday, July 5, with a family picnic at the Halibut Point Recreation Area at 4:30 p.m.  Those whose last names begin with A-J are asked to bring a salad and a bag of chips. Those whose last names begin with  K-Z are asked to bring a dessert and a 6-pack of soda.

To Meet July 1

Sitka’s Library Commission will meet at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, on the second floor of the Kettleson Memorial Library’s temporary location at 831 Lincoln Street. 

Probable topics include the library’s recent move to the Alaska Joint Library Consortium; the Summer Reading program; other recent and upcoming library programming; the reduction in library operating hours; and recent policy changes.

University of Alaska Southeast Chancellor Richard Caulfield invites the community to an open reception 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, to meet new Sitka Campus Director, Chris Gilmer, and to learn about new programs and opportunities at the Sitka Campus.

 

Grand Marshals

Announced for

4th of July Parade

Trish and Dirk White, co-owners of White’s Inc., will serve as the 4th of July parade grand marshals.

The theme for this year’s parade is “American Innovation,” commemorating the creativity and ingenuity of Americans. 

The parade will start at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 4, at the round-about and proceed to the stop light, turning right onto Lincoln Street and then progressing down to the Katlian intersection, ending at Totem Square. 

For those interested in marching in the parade, registration forms and the $25 registration fee can be turned in to the Big Brothers Big Sisters office at 201 Katlian St, Suite E by close of business on July 2 or call Kealoha for more information 747-3500.
