Pioneers to Meet

Pioneers of Alaska will hold its annual picnic noon-4 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Pioneer Park.

All pioneers are invited. Hot dogs and buns will be provided. Attendees should take a favorite picnic dish.

 

Event to Benefit

Fortress of Bear

The Bayview Pub will host a comedy and burlesque show fundraiser for Fortress of the Bear 10 p.m. Saturday, July 25.

Book Signing Benefit

For Fortress July 25

A benefit for The Fortress of the Bear will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at Fortress of the Bear.

Debi Terry, veteran volunteer and author of ‘‘You’re Keeping Bears Where? The Fortress of the Bear: A Volunteer’s Experience,’’ will be signing copies. Books also will be on sale.

All sales of the book will benefit the Fortress of the Bear.

 

Port Alexander

Museum Awarded

The Port Alexander Historical Society announces the award of a grant-in-aid from the Alaska State Museums for the archival storage room upgrade at the Port Alexander Museum

PAHS is dedicated to the stewardship of the maritime heritage and history of Port Alexander and surrounding area. PA was once know as the ‘‘King Salmon Capital of Alaska’’ during the hey-day of the 1930s, then almost a ‘‘ghost town’’ in the 1950s, and home to the hippie homesteaders of the 1970s.

Anyone with ties to PA, interested in the PA Museum or historic preservation work of PAHS, can call Karen at 747-7803.

Programs on Tap

Sitka National Historical Park offers daily guided programs teaching visitors about the park’s natural and cultural resources.

This week include:

Tuesday, 1 p.m. Totem Walk and 3 p.m. Sea Otter Talk;

Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. Russian-American History Walking Tour; 1 p.m. Totem Walk; 2 p.m. Totem Walk;

Thursday, 10:30 a.m. Russian-American History Walking Tour,  1 p.m.  Totem Walk, 2:30 p.m. Sea Otter Discovery Talk;

Friday, 11 a.m. Totem Walk and 2 p.m. Battle Walk;

Saturday, 10 a.m. Sea Otter Discovery Talk, 2 p.m. Totem Walk, 2:30 p.m. Sea Otter Discovery Talk.

The Russian-American History Walking Tour leaves from the Russian Bishop’s House. All others meet at the visitor center on Lincoln Street.

Story Time Set

Sitka Fine Arts Camp musical theater students will offer music and stories from the musical ‘‘Beauty and the Beast’’ 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at Kettleson Memorial Library. All ages are welcome. For more information, call 747-3085.

 

STA Seeks

Board Members

Sitka Tribe of Alaska is seeking   Tribal citizens to fill an unexpired term on the STA Tribal Council. The appointment will expire Nov. 30, 2015. Those interested in serving must send a letter of interest to Chairman Michael Baines, Tribal Council vacancy, 456 Katlian Street, Sitka AK 99835.

Letters must be received at the STA offices by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 17, 2015.

 

SSF Culinary

Scholarship

Award Given

The 6th annual Sitka Seafood Festival culinary committee announces that Adam Kanayurak has been named as the recipient of the SSF Culinary Scholarship.

‘‘There were many competitive applicants, and we would like to say thank you to all that applied,’’ said Alicia Haseltine of the festival committee.

Adam will be awarded $500 for furthering his culinary career, work alongside SSF chefs, and show off some of his skills to festival attendees.

Hall can be congratulated at the  SSF dinner Aug. 7 at Allen Hall.

Trail Closure

Herring Cove trail will be closed intermittently July 13-Aug. 1 for trail work by the U.S. Forest Service and Sitka Trail Works.

Hikers should use caution, and expect delays and detours, STW said.

 

 

Story Time Set

‘‘Firefighters A to Z’’ by Chris L. Demarest will be one of the readings during the the next preschool story time at Kettleson Memorial Library 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 16.

The program includes readings, rhymes, songs and a craft project. It is open to the public. For more information call the library at 747-8708.

 

Superhero Costume

Workshop at Library

Children ages 8 and up are invited to register for the ‘‘Make Your Own Super Hero’’ costume workshop 10:30 a.m. July 21 and 22 at Kettleson Memorial Library. 

The two-day program, by Cheryl Vastola, is free and materials will be provided to all the participants. Registration to participate is required.
