Walk to Explore

Park Tidepools

The public is invited to a one-hour park program and walk to explore the diversity of resources in the intertidal area 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Sitka National Historical Park visitor center.

Seasonal biologist James Sparks will guide visitors through the tidepools, exploring the historical and ecological richness of the ecosystem. 

Closed-toe shoes are suggested for tidepool exploration. Families are welcome, and children under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.

International Student

Exchange Discussed

Families who would like to learn more about opportunities to study abroad, or host an exchange student, are invited to an AFS Intercultural Programs meeting 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the Sitka High library.

Statewide AFS coordinator Misty Jensen, local volunteers and exchange students will provide information and answer questions. Dessert will be served. For more information, contact Rebecca Himschoot at 738 6744.

Tribal Council

Meets Sept. 16

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council will hold its regular monthly meeting 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 16 in the Sheet’ka Kwáan Naa Kahídi Community House at 200 Katlian Street.  The meeting is open to the public, and will feature recognition of employee Christine Paul for 20 years of service.  For information, call Kathy Hope Erickson, 747-7352.

BIHA Board Meets

Baranof Island Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will meet 5 p.m. Sept. 15 at 245 Katlian Street.

The public is welcome to attend.

Season’s End,

Boot Running Set

Lincoln Street will be the site for shopping, music, food and the Running of the Boots during the 7th annual Season’s End Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Signup for the run starts at 10 a.m. and the race at 11 a.m. Free hotdogs, hamburgers, fish and drinks will be served noon to 3 p.m. A suggested donation of $2 will be accepted to support SHS and MEHS activities.

Season’s End

Celebration

Set Sept. 26

Lincoln Street will be the site for shopping, music, food and the Running of the Boots during the 7th annual Season’s End Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The event, coordinated by the Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce, will be a celebration of the end of the visitor and fishing seasons.

Lincoln Street will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The 21st annual Running of the Boots will kick off registration at 10 a.m. next to St. Michael’s and the run starting at 11 a.m. Proceeds will go to the Sitka Local Foods Network. For more information contact Kerry at 752-0654.

At noon, the Alaska Cruise Association will be treating Sitkans to hotdogs, hamburgers and drinks, as a thank you from the cruise lines. Co-sponsors include Seafood Producers Coop, Sitka Sound Seafoods and Silver Bay Seafoods, who will prepare and serve rockfish and coleslaw, as their thank you to the community. A suggested donation of $2 will be accepted that will go to support SHS and MEHS activities. 

Lincoln Street will have live music and stores will be open. The public is invited.

YAS Board Meets

Youth Advocates of Sitka board of directors will meet 5:15-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at YAS’s 805 Lincoln Street  office. These meetings are open to the public.

The board is accepting letters of interest for a new member. Persons wanting to join a team of professionals working together to support the mental health of Alaska’s youth and their families can contact Annette at 747-2910.

Russell’s Donates

XtraTufs to Run

Russell’s is donating 10 pairs of XtraTuf boots as prizes for the annual Running of the Boots Sept. 26 event.

Also donated are toys from Sitka True Value and other prizes for adults including a pound of coffee from Highliner Coffee and a $50 gift certificate from The Pub.

The fun run will start at 10 a.m. “under the big tent” next to St. Michael’s Cathedral on Lincoln Street. As a fundraiser for the Sitka Local Foods Network, it’s more of a wild costume contest a race. Contestants are asked to register starting at 10 a.m. when the live music starts playing.  

The 10 prize categories include Zaniest Outfit, Best Kids Group and Best Couple. The last produce booth of the Sitka Farmers Market will be at the event. The race begins at 11 a.m. sharp; prizes will be awarded at 11:30 a.m. and the Chamber, Alaska Cruise Lines and local seafood processors are sponsoring lunch at noon.

Drill Conductor

Workshop Set

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a 1-hour fishing vessel drill conductor workshop in Sitka 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

The workshop will be conducted at the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road. It is an opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea.

The workshop will cover cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs; helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills. 

Drill conductor workshops meet the training requirements for documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. The workshop is offered to commercial fishermen at no cost, with support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The workshop is $175 to all others.

Film Noir Club

Shows ‘The Killers’

Kettleson Memorial Library’s Film Noir Club will screen the 1946 classic, “The Killers,” starring Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner, 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the library.

Those who haven’t joined the club, can register in person at the library, or by calling the library at 747-8708. Registration is required. Refreshments will be provided.

No School

There will be no school at Baranof Elementary School Sept. 25, 28 and 29 to allow for  teacher inservices.

SAFV Board Meets

The board of Sitkans Against Family Violence will meet 4:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the shelter. The meeting is open to the public. For directions, and more information, call 747-3370.

Applicants Sought

Sitka National Historical Park is accepting applications for both park guide and park ranger positions  for the winter season.

These part-time and full-time, temporary appointments are expected to last from approximately November through April. 

Application packets are available on the door at 103 Monastery Street, Sitka, by contacting the park at 747-0107, or by downloading the application at http://www.nps.gov/sitk/getinvolved/workwithus.htm. All applications must be postmarked or received by 5 p.m. Sept. 17.

KGH Photos Set

School pictures for Keet Gooshi Heen elementary will be taken on Monday, Sept. 14.

Teachers will hand out picture packets for students to take home. On the day of photos, students are to take the picture packets and money back to school.

Community photos will be taken 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at KGH school in the multipurpose room. For more information call 747-8395.

Get Grants From

United Way of SE

United Way of Southeast Alaska recently presented Community Impact Grant awards totaling $30,273 to 11 regional non-profit organizations from a pool of 12 applicants.

Among the awardees are: Southeast Alaska Independent Living, $3,500 for its rural outreach program; Sitkans Against Family Violence, $2,500 for shelter operations; and Sitka Local Foods Network, $1,765 for its education garden.

The total amount of requests was in excess of $65,000. 

United Way of Southeast Alaska is an independently governed, non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening lives, helping people, and improving community conditions in Southeast Alaska.
