School Board Meets

The Sitka School Board will meet to discuss a SESPA grievance 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the district office board room, the board said.

The board will hold a hearing on a grievance and will go into executive session. The public is encouraged to attend.

City League

Basketball Set

Registration for City League basketball is being offered at Sitka Community Schools.

Player fees are $75 and sponsor fees are $400 per team, and are due Oct. 8.

Teams can sign up for one practice Oct. 12-15. The City League basketball season begins Oct. 19 at Blatchley gym.

Elks Soccer

Shoot Sept. 27

Sitka Elks Lodge 1662 will hold its Annual Soccer Shoot Sept. 27 at Blatchley Middle School gym.

The community event is free of charge for boys and girls ages 4-13.

Soccer times are: 12:30 p.m., 4-7 years; 2 p.m., 8-9 years; 3 p.m., 10-11 years; and 4 p.m., 12-13 years.

Chamber to Meet

The Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday, Sept. 30, will feature a forum of the four candidates who are running for the Assembly.

As always, the public is invited to attend and take questions for the candidates. The event will be held in the Westmark Sitka banquet room, and will begin promptly at noon.

New Archangel

Dancers Perform

The final summer performance of the New Archangel Dancers will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Odess Theater in Allen Hall on the SJ Campus.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10. All are welcome and invited to attend.

Story Time Set

The preschool story time program 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Kettleson Memorial Library will be run by Miss Tracy.

Books about cookies will be read. Everybody is welcome. For more information, call the library at 747-8708.

  ‘Lend a Friend’

Program at Library

Curious George appeared in last year’s Alaska Day parade and Kettleson Memorial Library says that Pete the Cat, Greg the Wimpy Kid and the Very Hungry Caterpillar, among others, also want to have time away from the library.

Ten paper friends are waiting to be taken home by children through the library’s Lend a Friend program.

Lend a Friend is a new independent learning program for children of elementary age. Children can keep the paper friend home for a week, and share and write about adventures with them.

Live Election

Forums on Raven

Raven Radio will host a live election forum 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, with candidates for Assembly. The candidates will answer questions live.

School Board candidates will be hosted 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1.

Unitarians Meet

At Sunday’s Unitarian Fellowship meeting, Kerry MacLane will explore different ways that Unitarian Universalists use meditation in their fellowships. Some meditations will be tried and be followed by discussion.

Fellowship begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:45 a.m. Soup and bread follow the program at noon. The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind, off Spruce Street.

The White Elephant Shop will have Halloween decorations available for purchase noon-3 p.m. Saturday.

Decorations will be in the main store only and costumes will be put out at a later date.

The Sitka Human Services Transportation Advisory Committee is accepting grant applications for capital purchases to provide or support transportation needs of human services clients.

Nora Daunhauer’s Memoirs

Weaves Tales, Plays, Poetry

Dauenhauer, Nora, Life Woven With A Song. University of Arizona Press. Softbound. 135 pages.

This is a nice gathering of reminiscences, tales of discriminations against Alaska Natives, research on the Tlingit people by one of them ( Nora), and poetry. All have been printed elsewhere over the years, but this is the first time they’ve been gathered together.

All are quite interesting. Your reviewer knew about the research part as Nora and her late husband, Richard, spent many years compiling Tlingit oral literature and putting it into written form.

The remembrances begin with Nora’s happy memory as a child of the family fishing boat encountering a heavy run of salmon. Nora and her two brothers did the fish cleaning when Dad’s gurdy and the four trolling poles produced quantities of salmon on the deck, while Mother steered the boat circling the school of fish.

Further childhood memoirs of a happy traditional Tlingit childhood, this on Douglas Island across from Juneau, and the joy and pain of growing up in a prejudiced time and place.

Then a complete surprise for me - a short section of excellent poetry about Nora’s family, places she knows and visited, wild berries for the harvesting, and the weather.

Here’s a sample:

‘‘Ernestine’s House, Hoonah, Alaska, 6 A. M.

I woke to smell of smoke

of fresh wood crackling

from the stove,

bringing back the feel

of my father’s clan house,

Brown Bear Den House

radiating families’ care.

I can almost taste

the smoked deer meat

coming out of a container

of seal oil.

Brown Bear Den House --

a cavern of memory.’’

The final section of the book is three plays portraying Raven as a trickster, con man, and slapstick artist in general. These and others were put on by Naa Kahiki Theater for some years. I found these the least impressive, although the author does state this Raven is to be compared with Coyote of the Southwest. But the Tlingit Raven is far different from Old Man Coyote who does nothing but act as a trickster and clever clown.

Tlingit Raven, although he jokes at times, is far more serious, the one who brings the moon, stars, and sun to the then Twilight People, the Tlingit. Overall, a chance to meet Nora in various roles.
