Trap Shooting

Back in Action

The Sitka Sportsman’s Association’s trap machine has been repaired and is back in operation at the indoor shooting range, 5211 Halibut Point Road. 

The public is invited to trap and skeet shooting on Saturdays, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

New Hours at

Starrigavan Rec

The Starrigavan Recreation area will begin winter operations on Oct. 1. All gates will open at 9 a.m. and close at 3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

Gates will remain closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Gates may be closed at any time because of the accumulation of snow or ice on roadways.

Gate hours will affect access to the artesian well, campground, Starrigavan Creek cabin and the Mosquito Cove trailhead. Walk-in traffic is permitted when gates are closed. Motorists are asked to refrain from blocking gates when parking. Call the Sitka Ranger District at 747-6671 with questions.

Speech Therapy

To its Services

SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital has added speech and language services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Those services include help with feeding and swallowing issues, stroke rehabilitation, and other speech and language disorders.

To provide these therapies, SEARHC has contracted the services of Suzan Hess, MS, CCC-SLP. Hess earned both her bachelor of science and master of science in speech and language pathology from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

She has a special interest in early intervention, child development, infant-child mental health, swallowing disorders and stroke rehabilitation.

Hess has worked as a speech and language pathologist in the Sitka area since 2000 and will be available at the Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital campus on an as-needed basis. Patients who receive a referral from their primary care provider can make appointments through the SEARHC physical therapy department.

 Mammograms

Offered Free

In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital will offer free screening mammograms every Wednesday throughout October.

“Cost should not prevent a woman from getting cancer screening,” said Martha Pearson, SEARHC Health Promotion Director. “Here is a chance for everyone to encourage a woman they love to take care of her health.”

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer) among Alaskan women. Regular screening can often find breast cancer early when treatments are most likely to be successful and increases the chances of long-term survival.

All Sitka residents are eligible to receive this free breast cancer screening. SEARHC is encouraging women to take advantage of this opportunity.

Former commercial fisherman Dean Adams will read from his book “Four Thousand Hooks” (University of Washington Press), 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Old Harbor Books, 201 Lincoln Street.

Library Board

Meets Oct. 7

The City and Borough of Sitka’s Library Commission will meet 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 7, on the second floor of the Kettleson Library’s temporary location at 831 Lincoln Street.

Probable agenda items include a report from the Library History Committee; a discussion of statewide library employee compensation; recent and upcoming library programming; and an update on the library expansion project.  Books Sought for

Alaska Day Sale

The Friends of Kettleson Memorial Library is accepting book donations for its Alaska Day Book Sale, scheduled for 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, on the second floor of the library’s temporary home at 831 Lincoln Street.

Donations may be made to the library until Thursday, Oct. 15.

Types of books needed are: recently published; gently used; collectible; local interest; and/or Alaskana. Since the library will be limited in what donations it can accept before returning to the newly renovated building next year, this is an opportunity to make book donations normally made at the end of the tax year, the group said.
