Services for Maria “Sally” Tambag have been scheduled for Monday, April 25.

A funeral Mass is to be held at noon at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Following burial at Sitka National Cemetery, a reception will be held at the church.

Sally died April 14 at the Sitka Pioneers Home. She was 94.

She was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Palnab Virac Catanduanes, Philippines. She came to Sitka in 1978, and worked in the Sitka School District for many years.

She had resided at the Pioneers Home since 2020.

She was active in the Filipino Community of Sitka.

Sally’s husband, Joe Tambag, died in Sitka in 1985.

Survivors include a stepson, Leo Mina, of San Jose, California; and two sisters, Lydia, who lives in Italy, and Estella, who lives in the Philippines.

Pallbearers at Monday’s service will be Pete Villanueva, Tom Buzard, Russadell Buzard, Elpi Manuel, Salvador Agne and John Wathen.

The Sitka High School baseball, softball, football and football cheerleading programs got a boost Tuesday when the School Board unanimously approved $17,000 in coaching stipends for the sports. The programs, which were started by community members and hadn’t received district funding before, will remain responsible for paying their own travel expenses.
