Rose Elaine Calhoun
Rose Elaine Calhoun, 84, of Sitka, went home to be with the Lord on June 21, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Jan. 15, 1938, in Centralia, Washington, to Lane and Rose Capps. She grew up in Doty, Washington, and graduated from Pe Ell High School in 1955. After graduation she moved to Seattle, Washington, and worked at the Federal Reserve Bank for several years.
She had amazing friends, one of whom introduced her to her future husband, Jon Calhoun, in 1959. He says he loved everything about her and that she was a wonderful dancer. The two married in Seattle on Dec. 10, 1960, and moved to Sitka the day after to begin married life in Alaska.
Jon and Elaine welcomed two sons to the family: Scott and Robert. The boys were (are) active in sports, and their parents attended every event. Before each game, Elaine would tell them “Aim good!” a tradition that she maintained with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The couple enjoyed dancing, bowling, boating, playing cards and taking road trips to the Lower 48 and through Alaska.
Elaine’s greatest joy was being surrounded by her family, and spending time with her many friends.
Elaine was known for her sweet/hot mustard and flavorful pretzels, and guarded her recipes from ever her family members. Her cowboy cakes were a birthday favorite, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren always knew they could pop into Grandma’s house and find homemade goodies.
She was active in the community, serving on the board of directors of ALPS Federal Credit Union, and volunteering at St. Peter’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, of which she was a member. She even did a stint as a lunch lady at Blatchley Middle School. She also worked in the family business, Sitka Bottling, for decades.
Left to cherish her memory are her spouse, Jon; sons Scott (Jonie) and Robert (Susan); grandchildren Ryne (Cinthia), Bryn (Katie), Taryn, Bryce and Nolan; and great-grandchildren Nikolas, Junior, Caleb, Yareli, Ysabella and Josephine Rose.
A service will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at St. Peter’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church. For those unable to attend in person, a Zoom link is available upon request at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
A reception will follow the service, at the See House.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to St. Peter’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 611 Lincoln St., P.O. Box 1130, Sitka, AK 99835.
