Sitkan Lavina H. Adams Passes Away at Age 82

Lavina H. Adams
Lavina H. Adams, a resident of Sitka, passed away on May 26, 2022, at Swedish Hospital Cherry Hill Campus, in Seattle, Washington.
She was born on August 16, 1939, in Kake, to James and Elizabeth Thomas. She married Harlan J. Adams on May 13, 1959. Both Lavina and Harlan loved to travel. They enjoyed their cruises to Florida, Mexico, and the Bahamas, and traveled to Reno, Las Vegas, Miami, and Seattle.
Lavina was a dorm aide at Mt. Edgecumbe High School and worked at Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium in several departments. She also enjoyed going fishing with Harlan, and the photo above is a fish she caught in the Sitka Salmon Derby.
She loved retirement, as she could read and work on her beading. She also enjoyed workshops that Sealaska sponsored – she made a halibut hook and a fur hat, and enjoyed any class offered by Delores Churchill.
Lavina is survived by husband of 63 years, Harlan Adams; son Thomas H. Adams; daughter Connie Adams Johnson; and granddaughters Megan E. Johnson, and Catherine L. Johnson. She also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grandkids and cousins, including family from Kake, Yakutat, and throughout Alaska.
The following family members preceded Lavina in death: son Harlan Adams Jr.; parents James and Elizabeth Thomas; sister Joan L. Thomas; sister and brother-in-law Norma and John Willis Sr.; and son-in-law James M. Johnson.
By Lavina’s request no funeral services will be held, and her ashes will be spread in a private family ceremony. The family will post on Facebook the date and time of a celebration of life for Lavina.

The Youth Totem Pole Project blessing of the log ceremony will be held at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center. Pacific High youths and carver Tommy Joseph will be introduced and the story and design of the totem pole project will be presented.

Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reports ice on Swan Lake is 7-9 inches deep and safe for skating. However, officials warn skaters to avoid the end of the lake near Lakeside Grocery, since the ice is thinner there.
