Willie James Wooten Dies; Service to be in Alabama

Willie James Wooten, a man who loved children and music, died in Sitka  on June 25, three days before his 55th birthday.

Willie was born June 28, 1967, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Joe and Annie Bell Wooten. He was raised in Brooklyn until 1977, when the family moved to Mobile, Alabama.

Willie graduated from W.P. Davidson High School in Mobile, and for the last few years had come to Sitka from Miami, Florida, as a seasonal worker in the fishery industry.

Along with his enjoyment of kids and music, he truly believes in “Yahweh, God of the Israelites,” his family said.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Louis Wooten Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Annie Bell Wooten; his son Renwick James (Shantel) Tarleton; grandchildren Isaiah and Skylar Tarleton; sisters Lynne Denise Wooten-Lewis and Trina Kaye Wooten; and brother, Jose Wooten Jr. All are residents of Mobile.

The family plans to hold services in Mobile on July 23.

The Youth Totem Pole Project blessing of the log ceremony will be held at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center. Pacific High youths and carver Tommy Joseph will be introduced and the story and design of the totem pole project will be presented.

February 1975

Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reports ice on Swan Lake is 7-9 inches deep and safe for skating. However, officials warn skaters to avoid the end of the lake near Lakeside Grocery, since the ice is thinner there.
