Maria R. Huff Dies at 78; Lived in Sitka, Oregon

Maria R. Huff

Maria R. Huff, who spent 35 years fishing in Alaska and Washington waters, died July 31 in Dallas, Oregon. She was 78.

She was born April 5, 1944, the first of 10 children of Refugio and Jana Zammaron, in Valle Hermosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

She started working in fields when she was 10, and continued working in orchards and canneries throughout her young adulthood.

Around 1964 she came to Sitka. She worked several jobs to support her young sons – she spoke often of the Coffee Cup Cafe, in the 300 block of Lincoln Street, and also worked at the American Legion and Revards restaurant.

She met  Timothy Huff, and they were married here on Jan. 23, 1972. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

In 1975, they moved to Dallas where they raised their five children, and continued a life of commercial fishing on their 74-foot longliner, the F/V Red Baron, off Alaska and Washington.

Maria enjoyed cruising, camping and trout fishing. She also had a love for flowers in the spring, and she visited Reno, Nevada, as often as possible.

Maria is survived by her husband, Tim Huff of Dallas; sons David Jackson of Hillsboro, Oregon, Dan (Valerie) Jackson of Dallas, Donald Huff of Dallas, and Dean (Judi) Jackson of Sitka; her daughter Cindy Huff of Dallas; and 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will be celebrating “this wonderful lady” Aug. 13, at a family home in Dallas.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
