Carol Susan Shorey
Longtime Sitka resident Carol Susan Shorey passed away in Anchorage at the age of 82 on August 12, 2022.
Carol was born April 23, 1940, in St. Albans, Vermont, one of six children (all girls) to Charles Duffern (“Duffer”) Hatfield and Mildred Emma (Brousseau) Hatfield. She lived and worked in St. Albans, where she later met and married Leonard (“Lenny”) Harry Shorey. Lenny adopted her daughter Valerie (Shorey) Connell, and nine years later they had another daughter, Rachael Lynn Shorey on March 19, 1972.
On July 7, 1977, Carol and her children moved with Lenny to Sitka, where he worked first as a logger and then as a maintenance man for the Sitka School District.
Over the years Carol worked various jobs such as waitressing and housekeeping, but mainly she was a housewife and mother to her children. She volunteered at the Sitka Senior Center for a while, and during her lifetime she was a member of the Elks, American Legion and Moose Club.
Carol and Lenny were eventually divorced, and Lenny moved to Montana, but she and her children remained in Sitka.
Some of Carol’s favorite pastimes were playing bingo, decorating for all the holidays and watching Disney movies with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She had a big heart and was always willing to lend a hand to her family whenever they needed it. She had a unique sense of humor, and had a lot of made-up funny names for things that kept her family constantly laughing. Oh, the stories she could tell!
Carol will be greatly missed but there are many wonderful memories that will always remain.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mildred; four of her five sisters (Eleanor, Sally, Beverly and Patricia); her husband Lenny Shorey; and daughter Rachael Shorey.
Surviving family members include her sister, Betty Warren, daughter Valerie Connell of Sitka, granddaughters Amanda Roberts, Kalene Koelling, Susan Shorey, China Nelson, Jacey Nelson, and grandson Keaton Koelling.
She also is survived by eight great-grandchildren, including a great granddaughter on the way in January 2023.
A celebration of life will be held for Carol upstairs in the Moose Lodge at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 1. A main course (pasta) and cake will be provided but snacks and side dishes are welcome.
Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
