Katherine Mary Lott Hope
Katherine Mary Lott Hope passed away in Juneau on June 15, 2022, at age 81.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Northern Lights United Church in Juneau.
Katherine was born Sept. 17, 1940, in Yakutat, the oldest of four children of Norman and Nellie (Brown) Lott. Her Tlingit name was Daxwood z’oo, kwa’ashk’i Kwa’an Humpy Clan-noow hit-forthouse, a name given to her in memory of her mother, Nellie (Brown) Lott.
After graduating from Sheldon Jackson High School in 1960, she met and married Fred Hope. They had two children, Shirley and Loren.
Katherine held various jobs throughout Alaska. The most enjoyable one for her was working as a greeter at the tramway in Juneau. She met people from all over the world and made many friends. She always went above and beyond, willing to help others, at no cost.
“If you met Katherine and gave her a hug, she was your friend for life,” family said. “She was beautiful inside and out, and had a big heart.”
She enjoyed fishing, berry picking, going to Alaska Native Sisterhood meetings, church, hiking trails around Juneau and Sitka, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Holidays were another joy, especially Christmas time – she was known in the family as Mrs. Santa Claus.
Katherine lived life to the fullest.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie (Brown) Lott; her father, Norman Lott; brother Norman Lott Jr.; a sister, Mary Borbridge (Sabon); nephew Clifford White; and an uncle, Conrad Brown.
Surviving are Katherine’s children and their families: Shirley (Hope) Littlefield and her husband Pat, of Sitka and their son Loren M. Littlefield; and Loren Hope (Priscilla Jorden) of Juneau, and their children, Carrie Hope, Ruby Hope, Jessica Hope and Jason Hope.
Her brothers Ervin Lott, Patrick Lott, and Lloyd Borbridge also survive.
Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
