Raymond Walter Howard

Raymond Walter Howard, a Sitka resident for most of his life, died Nov. 3 in the Orange Park Hospital in Florida, at the age of 59.

His ashes will be spread at Old Sitka at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10, and a celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. at Ernie’s Bar. Those attending are welcome to take a side dish or dessert to share.

Ray was born Sept. 3, 1963, at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital, the son of Martha J. (Allashuk) and George R. Howard Sr. His father was from a family of 17, and his mother from a family of 16, from Beaver, Alaska.

Ray attended Sitka schools, and was on the wrestling team in high school – he got his nickname, “Killer Ray,” in his wrestling days. He also played softball, and enjoyed fishing and hunting, and playing pool.

During the annual Sitka Salmon Derby he volunteered to help out at Crescent Harbor.

He worked in maintenance at SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital.

He moved to St. Augustine, Florida, about a year ago.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, George R. and Martha Howard; his grandmother Helen K. Howard; uncles Glenn Howard Sr., Roger Howard Sr., Louis Howard Sr.; and aunties Shirley Howard and Ruby Lanham.

He is survived by his son, Harley Frank, of Puyallup, Washington; sister and brother-in-law Velma and Robert Somerville; brother George R. Howard Jr.; sister Anna Howard; aunties Liz Howard and family, Gina Lundy, Diane Howard, Elsie Pitka and Annie John; and uncles William Henry, Roy Henry, and Jerry Henry. 

Also surviving are nephews Shayne (Caroline) Thomas, Scott Kennedy, Jacob Kennedy George (Rachel) Wathen, Bob Hendrix, David Blore and wife Bev Chartrand, Gary Blore and Michael Blore; and nieces Gina Kennedy, Ann (Matt) Taylor, and Helen Kennedy, Katina Wathen.

Numerous uncles and aunties and cousins also survive.
