Life of Ethan T. McGill To be Celebrated Aug. 2

Ethan Tyler McGill

Ethan Tyler McGill, age 17, passed away unexpectedly in Sitka on July 11.
Ethan was born on September 16, 2006, in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he spent the first three years of his life. During those years, he experienced many fun times with his parents, from day trips to the beach, to road trips to New York, to visiting the animals at the zoo.
After leaving Virginia, his family relocated to Sitka, Alaska, making their way across the country by car, allowing him to see so much of the world at such a young age.
Later in life, Ethan really took to video games, and started by playing the Lego games at a young age. As he got older, he got more into Minecraft, FallOut, and Roblox. Each year for his birthday, he’d get to pick a theme, which often aligned with his current favorite video game. His family would do everything they could to make special decorations and cakes that aligned with that theme. He was such a happy boy in general, but on his birthdays, he would beam in pride, making it clear to those around him just how much he loved it. He especially liked the cakes, which were always intricately made with love.
He spent many hours playing with his little sister, or his friends, either online or in person. Anyone who crossed paths with Ethan knew what a kind-hearted, fun-loving person he was. His energy was contagious, and he only ever put out love and acceptance.
Ethan is survived by his parents, Natasha and Charles McGill, his younger sister Penelope, his Grandma Grace Gillian, his uncles Joshua Lawrence and Kevin Brady, his aunts Heather McGill-Kavanaugh and Lakrisha Brady, his Grandpa Ralph Brady, and many other extended family members such as cousins, great-aunts and great-uncles.
He was preceded in death by his grandmothers Diana J. Brady and Marian E. Tozzi, and his uncles Marcus W. Brady and Jeromy D. Childress.
A celebration of Ethan’s life is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, August 2, at Centennial Hall. Family and friends are invited to help the family remember Ethan and send him off in a positive way.
“Please bring a memory to share, on paper and/or with the group,” the family said.
The family also is asking for any of his artist friends to assist with a project prior to the celebration.
In addition, those who have a favorite memory they’re willing to have put on display at the celebration of life are asked to send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
