Marian Leder went home to be with Jesus on Oct. 13, the culmination of a three-year battle with cancer. She was 77.
A former Sitka resident, she had been living in Juneau since June.
She was born on Jan. 7, 1935, in Helston, Cornwall, England. She grew up in England and studied nursing and radiology at Guy’s Hospital School of Nursing in London.
She was a very adventurous soul, and in 1960 she journeyed to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with a couple of friends to work at Vancouver General Hospital. She learned to ski at Mt. Baker and spent all her time off hiking, camping and exploring the countryside.
In 1963 she ventured even farther north to Sitka, when she saw a magazine ad for nurses. Her first of many nursing jobs in Alaska was at Sitka Community Hospital. She also worked for many years at the Sitka Pioneer Home.
It was in Sitka that she met and married Gene Charles Leder and became the mother of four children. She learned to fish and hunt and cook everything they caught.
Marian loved to read the Bible and taught all her children the love of Jesus. She also loved sewing, gardening and hiking.
After 35 years in the nursing profession Marian retired in 1995 and moved to Lynden, Wash. Not one to officially retire, she continued taking care of people by taking blood pressures at the Lynden Senior Center, dog- and house-sitting for friends and many other activities to keep her busy. She loved having the view of Mt. Baker, reminding her of when she first moved to North America.
After moving to Juneau in June, she had a wonderful summer with family and friends. She always considered Alaska to be her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cyril and Dorothy Bodle, and her husband, Gene Charles Leder.
Marian is survived by her children, Wendy Leder of Las Vegas, Nev., Wade Leder of Fairbanks, Sandra Leder Bryant of Lynchburg, Va., and Gary Leder of Juneau; and seven grandchildren.
Marian was a courageous woman with a heart of gold. She was kind to everyone she met and was full of joy. She loved the Lord with all her heart. She will truly be missed by all who knew her, her family said.
A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Juneau Church of Christ Annex located at 8755 Trinity Drive in Juneau. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts can be sent to Love INC of Juneau.

Colliver donated the money after her business, Colliver Shoes, borrowed the truck to use during Moonlight Madness. The truck is in need of an estimated $20,000 worth of restoration work, Swearingen said.

Sitka Community Hospital Administrator Martin Tirador and hospital board chairman Lawrence Porter told the Assembly Tuesday about the need for a new hospital to replace the existing 18-year-old one. The cost would be about $6.89 million with $2.2 million of that required locally.
