Dr. Wayne A. Jenkins

Dr. Wayne A. Jenkins, beloved husband, loving father, passed away on Oct. 5, 2012, at his home. He was 79.
A celebration of life is planned for next summer.
Wayne was born Oct. 10, 1932, in Salt Lake City, the son of Virginia Lindsay and Alton Horace Jenkins. He graduated from Nampa High School, and received a bachelor of science degree from Brigham Young University in 1957; a doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Kansas City in 1962; and a master of science in education degree at Indiana University in 1972.
He served in the U.S. Army, and with the U.S. Public Health Service, retiring with the rank of captain in December 1991.  He was stationed in Ketchikan, Alaska, and Alameda, Calif.; attached to the U.S. Coast Guard at Kings Point, N.Y., attached to the Merchant Marine Academy; attached to the Division of Hospitals – San Francisco, Calif., Bloomington, Ind., and Honolulu, Hawaii; and attached to the Division of Indian Health – Fort Defiance, Ariz.; and then SEARHC in Sitka.
He and Sabra Ellis were married in Ketchikan Jan. 8, 1966. They moved to Sitka in 1981.
He retired from the U.S. Public Health Service at the SEARHC Dental Clinic in December 1991 with 30 years of active military service. He then served for many years as a dentist for Native Health Corporations throughout Alaska and Arizona.
He received a National Defense Service Medal Good Conduct Medal and Army Occupation Medal (Germany) while he was in the Army; and a Certificate of Appreciation from the North Slope Borough Department of Health and Social Services in 1998.
He was a very active member of the Rotary Club and belonged to the Elks Lodge. Among his interests were fishing, hunting and taking RV trips.
He was preceded in death by his son Donald Wayne Jenkins of Salt Lake City.
He is survived by his wife, Sabra Ellis Jenkins of Sitka; daughter Sabrina Ellis Jenkins and son Robert Barkhoefer of Sitka; daughter Rosalind Ellis DeRensis and husband Peter DeRensis and their sons Anthony and Nicholas of Norwich, N.Y.; daughter Cassandra Ellis Jenkins and son Edmund Johnson and daughter Amelia Johnson of Nikiski, Alaska; his daughter Debra Sue Ramsay and husband Bill Ramsay and daughters Marina, Anelise and Alexandra Ramsay of Sudbury, Mass.; and his son Ralph Jenkins and wife Teresa Jenkins and children Erica Bauer, Jessica Dahl, Charlene Young, John Baucom, Brian Baucom, Whitney Jenkins and Coltyn Jenkins of Salt Lake City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Sitka Historical Society.
