Phillip D. Campbell, who had often talked about returning to Sitka, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2013, in Charleston, Ore. He was 53.
At his request, no services will be held.
Phillip was born on Jan. 27, 1960, in Sitka, to Ethel Louise (Williams) and Howard B. Campbell. Phillip was a Tlingit from the Raven/Kiksadi tribe of Sitka.
He was a logger in Southeast Alaska for 25 years, and more recently worked in Charleston, doing board repair work.
He loved to fish and camp, take long walks through the woods and help his friends.
He will be missed by all of his family and friends.
Although he left a long time ago, he kept in touch and will be missed by his Sitka family.
Phillip is survived by his mother Ethel Campbell, of Coos Bay, Ore.; brother Steven Campbell, sister Marcy Morales, and his children Kenny, “Shadow,” Angie, Rachel, Daniel, Matthew and Janel.
His many aunts, Reta Oxford, Selina Claggett, Emma Farquhar and Sarah Williams; uncles Frank Oxford, Steven Campbell and Earl Williams Sr. of Sitka; cousins Cyrus Farquhar, Helen Koenig, Thomas Farquhar, Karin Fitzsimons, Alicia Williams, EJ Williams, Charlie Farquhar. Dotti Beecroft, Yvette Crockett, Crystal Barringer, Charles Green and Mike Hammer also survive.
Phillip was preceded in death by his father, Howard Campbell, and his brother, Brian Campbell.
Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
