John Jay Tackitt, 82 lost his battle with cancer July 3, 2013, in Sitka.

John was born Sept. 22, 1930, in Spearman, Texas, to Zula (Nichols) and Felix J. Tackitt. His siblings were his older half-brother Guy Nichols, and older brother Billy Tom, and younger sisters Lola and Peggy.
John’s young life was spent traveling from state to state as his family relocated during the hard years of the Depression.
Like his Dad Felix, John was a talented Jack-of-all-trades and could put his hands and mind to figuring out how to do just about anything.
Graduating from Meridian (Idaho) High School in 1949, he took to the rodeo circuit as well as cooked and managed several restaurants during this time.
He met Irene Turner through the rodeo circuit and they were married in Star, Idaho, in 1954. They had two sons: Dan, born in 1955 and John Allen, born 1957. They divorced in 1964.
John drove truck than traveled to Alaska where he worked on the king crab ships as deck hand, cook and chief engineer.
On one of his visits back to Idaho he met Lorraine Morris. They married in 1970 and along with his stepchildren Curt, Jeff and Scott, moved to Tokeland, Wash., where he worked as chief engineer.
John and Lorraine divorced but remained life companions until 2011.
In 1974 they moved to Sitka where he worked for Sitka Sound Seafood and then Halibut Producers Co-operative until retiring in 2007.
He was a member of the Sitka Masonic Lodge, Sitka Elks Lodge, and the Sitka Moose Lodge.
John loved his family and cooking for others. And with his three dachshunds (puppies as he called them) traveled all over the Northwest.
He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by his sister Lola Porter of Picabo, Idaho; sons, Dan Tackitt of Sitka and John Tackitt of Boise, Idaho, and stepchildren Curt Morris, Jeff Morris, and Scott Morris.
Many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
