Patricia Jean Fredrick

Patricia Jean Fredrick, a Sitka resident for nearly 50 years, died at her home Tuesday of cancer. She was 91.
Friends and family will gather 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Swan Lake Senior Center.
Pat was born Nov. 9, 1922, in St. Cloud, Minn., the youngest of three children of Gladys Dayton and James Leghorn Beebe.
The family moved to Grand Rapids, Minn., in 1925, and Pat graduated from Grand Rapids High in 1940. She attended Itasca Junior College in Coleraine, Minn., where she earned an associates degree in home economics.
Pat worked as a chemical analyst for Oliver Iron Mining Company in Hibbing, Minn., before moving to Duluth, Minn., and joining the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She trained for the hospital corps in San Diego, Calif., and was stationed in Lake City, Fla., during her career. She was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Pharmacist Mate 3rd class.
After her discharge she attended business college in Duluth, where she met Theodore M. Fredrick. They were married in 1946, and settled down in Grand Rapids. They had a family of six children. In 1964 they moved to Sitka, where Pat stayed until her passing.
Pat was a homemaker while raising her children. Later, she worked as a popular waitress at Revard’s Restaurant – her favorite job of all time. She served for many years on the Kettleson Memorial Library Board, starting in the 1960s, when the library was in temporary quarters in the Armory. She was dedicated in seeing that Sitka had a full-service community library.
‘‘Mom’s family and close friends will miss her repertoire of jokes and sharp wit,’’ her family said.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and older brothers.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses: James and Linda (Doyle) Fredrick of Anchorage; Jill and Tom Scheidt, Cathy and Jim Revard and Chris and Ron Davison, all of Sitka; Carol Fredrick and Terry McIntyre of Carlton, Ore.; Paul and Becky (Brookman) Fredrick of Juneau.
Nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, also survive.

The Sitka High School baseball, softball, football and football cheerleading programs got a boost Tuesday when the School Board unanimously approved $17,000 in coaching stipends for the sports. The programs, which were started by community members and hadn’t received district funding before, will remain responsible for paying their own travel expenses.
