John L. Paul

Services have been scheduled for John Lee “JP” Paul, a U.S. Army veteran and a former Sitka resident.
He died Dec. 17 in Anchorage, at the age of 64.
Services will be at St. Michael’s Cathedral at noon Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, with military graveside services at Sitka National Cemetery immediately afterward.
A reception will follow at the American Legion Post 13. Those attending are invited to take a favorite dish to share.
John was born July 7, 1949, in Sitka, the youngest of nine children of Frank and Mary Paul.
After high school, he served with the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran.
He also was a fisherman and logger, and after moving to Anchorage he worked at the Alaska Native Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Frances, Florence Shields, Gertrude “Trudy” Wolfe, Georgianna Williams and Vivian Search; and brothers Frank Paul Jr., and Judson “Jake” Paul.
He is survived by his brother Ronald Paul in Hoonah, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Pete Karras Jr., J.R. Lindstrom, Ernie Karras, Kyle Young, Edward Miller and Cedar Pook.
Honorary pallbearers are Bertha Karras, Andrew Gamble, Gerald Gamble, Jean Hogue, Gina Evans, John Nielsen, Robert Loescher, Wanda Culp, Ed Young, George Young, Alfreda Lang, Jim Young, Geraldine Paul, Mark A. Jacobs and Harold Jacobs.

The Youth Totem Pole Project blessing of the log ceremony will be held at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center. Pacific High youths and carver Tommy Joseph will be introduced and the story and design of the totem pole project will be presented.

Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reports ice on Swan Lake is 7-9 inches deep and safe for skating. However, officials warn skaters to avoid the end of the lake near Lakeside Grocery, since the ice is thinner there.
