Will England, a former Sitka resident, died in his sleep at his home in Decatur, Ala., on Dec. 6, 2013, after battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A memorial was held Dec. 12 in Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church in Decatur.
Will was born in Johnston, R.I., Nov. 12, 1939, and attended LaSalle Academy in Rhode Island.
He served 28 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a first sergeant. He served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1972 as a helicopter pilot. After leaving the Army, he was a locksmith for 20 years.
He enjoyed woodworking, and embroidering, and had an embroidering business at the Hartsell flea market at Decatur until his health began to fail.
He and his wife, Karen, also raised Abyssinian cats.
Will was a Paul Harris Fellow and Major Donor with Rotary International.
He lived in Alaska for 31 years, and loved the beauty of the land. He and his wife moved from Sitka to Decatur in 2004.
Will was preceded in death by his parents, Isabelle (Alarie) and Wilfred J. England; brother Norman England; and sister, Florence Lauby.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Karen England, of Decatur; sons Arthur England of Baton Rouge, La., and Mark England of Anchorage; granddaughter Jessica England of Baton Rouge; and grandson Joseph England of Ardmore, Ala.
Memorial donations may be made to Rotary Club of Decatur and Hospice of the Valley.
