Joseph E. Howard Sr.

Services for Joseph E. Howard Sr. will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at St. Michael’s Cathedral.
Burial will be at Sitka National Cemetery, with a Color Guard. A potluck luncheon will follow at the ANB Founders Hall.
A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at St. Michael’s.
Mr. Howard died Oct. 20 at Sitka Community Hospital, where he was a resident of the long-term care unit. He was 84.
He was born Sept. 2, 1930, at Chatham, the son of James and Susie (Jackson) Howard. He attended Sheldon Jackson school through the sixth grade. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served during the Korean War. After his discharge in 1953, he served in the National Guard for 19 years.
Along with being a commercial fisherman, he was a driver and, as he  said, “a Jack of all trades, master of none.”
He loved to fish and hunt.
On Jan. 28, 1952, he married Norise Jeanette Church, in Sitka.
He was an active member of St. Michael’s from childhood, and sang in the choir.
He was a member of Sealaska, Shee Atika Inc., the American Legion Post 13, and the National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Christine Howard and grandchildren Alicia Howard and Evan Howard.
Survivors include his children, Joe E. Howard Jr. (Debbie) of Auburn, Wash.; Nadine R. Jones of Juneau; Eva M. Howard of Juneau; Michael J. Howard Sr. of Sitka; Twylia M. Osborne of Anchorage; and Serge Howard of Sitka.
His grandchildren are George Howard, Russell Howard and Joseph Howard III of Auburn; Mickey Jones of Juneau; Snuffy Jones of Gresham, Ore.; Norman Howard of Sitka; Christine Smith of Juneau; Michael Howard Jr., Jeffrey Howard and George Howard of Sitka; Christina Johnson of Sitka; Cara Jo DiCicco of Leesville, La.; and Stacey Roberts of Juneau.
Pallbearers will be Michael James Howard Jr., Ben Breece, Mark Davis, Richard McGee, Kenneth Nielsen Jr. and Michael Spoon.
Honorary pallbearers are Herman Davis, John Nielsen, Ethel Makinen, Robert Nielsen,  Harold Kitka and Kenneth Nielsen.
“The family thanks you for your condolences for our father, Joseph E. Howard Sr. He has gone home,” a family member said.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an account at Wells Fargo Bank, or through Nadine Jones at 500-4579.

The Sitka High School jazz band and vocal jazz choir both gave command performances to an audience of some 5,000 at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho. ... The SHS band director is Brent Purvis.
