Scott Johnstone

Dies in Arizona

Joel Barry Johnstone lost his courageous battle with lung cancer on May 20, 2015, at his home in Florence, Ariz. He was 66.

A celebration of his life was held May 25 in Florence.

He was born Feb. 28, 1949, in Sitka, the son of Chuck and Alice Johnstone. While he was growing up in Sitka, he was called Jay, and later he went by  Scott, the name of his grandfather.

As a teen he joined the U.S. Navy, and served primarily on Whidby Island. After his discharge he lived in other Western states, including Colorado and Montana.

He and his wife, Wendie, had been living in Florence for the past 17 years. They worked as a team as long-haul truck drivers.

In addition to his parents, Scott is survived by his wife, Wendie Johnstone, of Florence; son Allan Johnstone and daughters Christina Evans, Joelle Bauer and Anna McNeill; and six grandchildren, a step-grandson, four great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Scott was a loving son, husband and father, and his family was the most important part of his life, his family wrote. He is greatly missed.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
