Dr. Alvin Chadwick, Former Sitka Minister, Dies in N.M.

Dr. Alvin Kerry Chadwick, a Southern Baptist minister who had served in Sitka, entered heaven and met Jesus face to face on May 25, 2015, in Tajique, N.M.

At the time of his death, he was manager of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico’s Inlow Baptist Camp and Conference Center.

He was an active Christian, a faithful husband and a devoted father.

Chadwick was born Nov. 5, 1963, in Baldwin Park, Calif., the son of Kenneth and Barbara Chadwick. He married Deanna Lynn Lackey on May 19, 1990, in Las Cruces, N.M., and together they raised two children, Kenneth Chadwick, now a corporal in the United States Marines, and Abigail Anet Chadwick.

He chose to follow Jesus Christ as his Savior at a very young age. He was ordained as a minister of the gospel on Jan. 3, 1988, by Westside and Emmanuel Baptist Churches of Las Cruces.

In 1990, he earned a bachelor of arts degree from New Mexico State University. In 1995, he earned a master of divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Then, in 2013, he earned a doctor of ministry degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.

Chadwick generously invested his life and energy in helping others. He pastored Pleasant Valley Baptist Church of Pleasant Valley, Texas; Hachita Baptist Church  of Hachita, N.M; Bethel Baptist Church, Deming, N.M.; and First Baptist Church of Sitka.

He served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1993 to 1995. He also was a chaplain for Valley Baptist Medical Center, Harlingen, Texas; director of the BSU Christian Challenge in Silver City, N.M.; and  assistant director of the BSU Christian Challenge in Las Cruces.

After Chadwick’s return to New Mexico, he sought membership at First Baptist Church in Estancia. He also joined the New Mexico Singing Churchmen.

Chadwick was a member of the National Rifle Association and of the Civil Air Patrol, where he served as a chaplain. He enjoyed reading, photography, writing and hiking.

Because of his personality, influence and impact, Chadwick will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, his coworkers and his entire community.

He is survived by his parents; his beloved wife; his son and daughter; his brothers, Kenneth (Shelly) Chadwick and William (Jenelle) Chadwick; his sister, Audrey (Larry) Wauson; his in-laws, Archie and Lanee Lackey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled 1 p.m. June 1 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Estancia. His pastor and friend, Rev. Jonathan Richard, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Inlow Baptist Camp Camper Scholarship Fund.

Thanks to the generosity and expertise of the the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska broadband department, Tidal Network ; Christopher Cropley, director of Tidal Network; and Luke Johnson, Tidal Network technician, SitkaSentinel.com is again being updated. Tidal Network has been working tirelessly to install Starlink satellite equipment for city and other critical institutions, including the Sentinel, following the sudden breakage of GCI's fiberoptic cable on August 29, which left most of Sitka without internet or phone connections. CCTHITA's public-spirited response to the emergency is inspiring.
