Rocky Dale Underwood, a former Sitka resident, passed away in his sleep on Oct. 23 at his home in Rockport, Texas. He was 58.
At his request, no funeral service will be held. His family will scatter his ashes at a later date.
Rocky was born Oct. 24, 1956, in San Bernardino, Calif., the son of Marcella and Carrol Underwood. The family came to Sitka from Juneau when Rocky was a teen, and he graduated from Sitka High School in 1975.
After graduation he worked at Alaska Pulp Co. for several years, and also became a pilot, working for local floatplane services and the Civil Air Patrol. He loved flying, and teaching others to fly – he started teaching his daughter, Kristine, to fly while she was still in her car seat.
He also loved the beauty of the outdoors, fishing on his boat, and traveling to all parts of the globe.
After the APC mill closed in 1993, Rocky worked on the North Slope, in waste water treatment.
He moved to Texas about two years ago.
A devout Christian, Rocky was a kind man and helped anyone any way he could, his family said.
He is survived by his dearly loved daughter, Kristine Underwood, and former wife Leslie Underwood, of Sitka; his adored aunt, Peggy Long of Quartzsite, Ariz.; and cousins and other family members and friends.
Cards of condolence can be sent to 2215 Sawmill Creek Road, Sitka, AK 99835.
