Assembly to Check Out City Attorney Applicants

By SHANNON HAUGLAND
Sentinel Staff Writer
The Sitka Assembly will have a work session at 6 p.m. Wednesday to review applications from a dozen candidates for city attorney.
The Assembly is looking for a replacement for Theresa Hillhouse, city attorney the past seven years, who is leaving Sitka to take a position with the City of Anchorage in mid-March.
Among the 12 candidates are three current and former employees of the Sitka Tribe of Alaska: STA Tribal Attorney Allen Bell, STA Family Justice Center attorney Amy Stus, and former STA Tribal Attorney Jessica Perkins of Silverton, Ore.
Four of the dozen don’t meet the requirement of being licensed to practice law in Alaska, including one who is in law school and another who is a professional engineer but does not have a law degree.
Several applicants list experience as borough or county attorney, state prosecutor or contractor for the Alaska Office of Public Advocacy.
Alaska residents who have applied, besides Bell and Stus, are Robin Koutchak of Wasilla; Karl Lehr and Erin McCrum, both of Anchorage; and Michael Nash of Wrangell. Other attorneys who applied are Vincent Curry of Oro Valley, Ariz.; David A. Meisinger of Milwaukee, Wis.; and Kevin Wakley of Amarillo, Texas.
Jenny Alber of Charlotte, N.C., is the law school student who applied, and Brandon Willnecker of Ladera Ranch, Calif., is the non-attorney engineer who sent an application.
The advertised salary for the job is $83,283 to $117,686, depending on qualifications and experience.
The purpose of the Wednesday work session is to review resumes and cover letters, and whittle down the list of candidates for in-person interviews. The meeting will be held in the Centennial Hall Rousseau Room and is open to the public.
