Today's Voting Starts Wait-and-See for Results

Voting was reported steady in Sitka’s two precincts at Harrigan Centennial Hall in today’s municipal election.
Election officials reported to the city clerk just after noon today that 219 voters had cast ballots in Precinct 1 and 261 in Precinct 2.
Polls will be open until 8 p.m. for voters to choose a mayor, two Assembly members and three School Board members.

Two ballot questions also are on the ballot, one on a special marijuana sales tax with proceeds going to school activities, and the other about dedicating the $8.18 million from the sale of the old Sitka Community Hospital property to construction of a community haulout and boatyard.
City Clerk Sara Peterson said 719 voters cast advanced in-person absentee ballots, and 143 absentee mail and fax ballots have been received.
Those 862 ballots, and also any late-arriving mailed ballots postmarked by October 4 (today), will be counted Friday.
The clerk’s office said the results from today’s voting will be tallied in the Centennial Hall auditorium after polls close at 8 p.m. Peterson said she doesn’t expect results from the two precincts, located in other parts of the building, will be received before 8:45 p.m. The auditorium will have an area restricted to election officials, and another open to the public wishing to watch the tabulation process.
“After results from both precincts are received, the Canvass Board will count the official write-in candidate ballots,” Peterson announced. Write-in votes will be important in this election because they will determine the winner of the third open seat on the School Board.
Starting at noon Friday the Canvass Board will meet in the auditorium to count the absentee ballots and questioned ballots cast in the election, Peterson said.
The results will be unofficial until they are certified at the first Assembly meeting after the election.
