A California man and his teenage son stuck on a cliffside while hiking near Juneau were lowered to safety by rescuers Wednesday, Alaska State Troopers report.

Troopers at the Fairbanks dispatch center received a call at 4:52 p.m. Wednesday from the Juneau Police Department reporting Helge Weissig, 55, and his son Sasha, 13, both of Carlsbad, were stuck on a steep cliff while hiking the West Glacier Trail, above Mendenhall Lake.

Twelve members of the Juneau Mountain Rescue team hiked in to the area, rappelled down to the hikers, and lowered them to an area where they could hike back to the trailhead. JMR members accompanied the hikers out, and all reached the trailhead uninjured at 4:02 a.m. Thursday, troopers said.
