Historic Preservation Panel Meeting Slated
Sitka Historic Preservation Commission will hold a special meeting at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, February 27 at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
The commission will vote on whether to rescind recommendation of a demolition permit at 203 Kaagwaantaan Street.

Quilt Auction Set
Ocean Wave Quilters Guild will hold its annual scholarship auction 7 p.m. March 4 at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
The quilt guild will hold its regular meeting prior to the auction at 6:30 p.m. in Room 1.
The 7 p.m. event will include two types of silent auctions and an outcry auction. Refreshments will be available.
All are invited to bid on mini-quilts, fabric, and other crafting-related items to help raise scholarship funds for high school and Sitka Fine Arts Camp students.
Monthly meetings, September through June, are open to all, members or not. Those who pay the $25 dues receive a monthly newsletter, discounts on classes and other benefits.

NSRAA to Hold Board Meeting
Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association will hold its spring board of directors meeting 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 4 and 5 in the NSRAA conference room, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.

School Board Meets at SHS
The Sitka School District School Board will hold a school staff budget hearing 3:45 p.m. March 4 for secondary staff at the Sitka High School library. No action will be taken.
Utility Work Set
The City and Borough of Sitka has been notified that utility work will be conducted near the Thimbleberry and Heart Lake Trail through this week.
‘‘For public safety, we strongly recommend avoiding the trail during this time,’’ the city said in a news release.
Theater Work Party
Young Performers Theater program is seeking volunteers for a work party for its spring productions 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, March 8, at Odess Theater.
Help is needed in scenic, costume and props departments. Snacks and coffee are provided.
Mariner’s First Aid, CPR Class Slated
AMSEA is conducting a Mariner’s First Aid and CPR/AED class 8 a.m.-4 p.m. March 11, at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.
The cost for the class is $125. Attendees will receive the U.S. Coast Guard-accepted two-year first aid and CPR certification from the American Safety and Health Institute.

This class will cover CPR and automatic external defibrillators; treatment of choking; medical emergencies; trauma; environmental hazards; patient assessment; medical communications; drowning and hypothermia; and common fishing injuries.
Pelagic Rockfish Limit Reduced In Sitka Area
A reduction in the pelagic rockfish limits for 2025 in the Sitka Area has been announced by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
The affected area includes the marine waters west of Baranof and Chichagof Islands between 57˚ 30’ N. latitude and the latitude of Cape Ommaney (56˚N.). effective 12:01 a.m. March 1 through 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31. The regulations are
The resident daily bag limit will be three pelagic rockfish, six in possession, no size limit. The nonresident daily bag limit will be two pelagic rockfish, four in possession, no size limit.
‘‘Pelagic rockfish harvest has been on an increasing trend despite management measures to maintain harvest at historic levels,’’ the department said in a news release.
Reductions were also announced for marine waters in the Yakutat, Haines and Skagway, Juneau, Glacier Bay, Petersburg and Wrangell, Prince of Wales, and Ketchikan management areas.

Drill Conductor Classes in Sitka
AMSEA will conduct a fishing vessel drill conductor class 8 a.m.-7 p.m. March 22 at the NSRAA building, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.
The cost is $125 for commercial fishermen and $225 for all others. It meets the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels. Register online at www.amsea.org or call (907) 747-3287.
The class will cover cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, signal flares, and mayday calls; man-overboard recovery; firefighting; flooding and damage control; dewatering pumps, immersion suits and PFDs; helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures; and emergency drills. AMSEA’s fishing vessel drill conductor workshops meet the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels.
The class is an opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea. AMSEA is offering the class at a reduced cost to commercial fishermen with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, and AMSEA members.
