2023 Sitka Tourism Plan On Commission Agenda

Posted

By Sentinel Staff

The Planning Commission will consider a draft plan for the 2023 summer tourism season at Wednesday night’s regular meeting.

It will be the final commission meeting prior to submission to the Assembly for approval. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at Centennial Hall, and is open to the public.

The draft outline prepared by the planning department indicates that the commission has already agreed to repeat the Lincoln Street closure plan from this past tour season, with decisions yet to be made on location of the portable restrooms.

The possible sites listed include the ones used this year: one was an on-street parallel parking space on Lincoln Street near Barracks Street, and the other was near Wells Fargo Bank, where the restrooms cut off vehicle traffic on Maksoutoff Street for the duration of the cruise season.

Other possible sites listed in the draft plan for the restrooms are:

– Totem Square

– Harbor Way/Castle Hill (behind Harry Race building)

– Wells Fargo/FNBA parking lots

– Harrigan Centennial Hall

– College Drive/Crescent Harbor Playground

Also to be considered are safety improvements including “intersection changes/management for Lake/Lincoln,” and “improved pedestrian crossings (potentially RFFB’s) along Harbor Drive,” and crossing guards.

Other items listed for Planning Commission action are improved signage, education and outreach on bike safety; continuation of the bathroom grant and walk/bike incentives programs; and continuation of “food cart permit opportunities in Lincoln Street closure area.”

The draft plan also has a list of “future needs/consideration,” such a bike/pedestrian path on Halibut Point Road and bus electrification, which might be referred to the Sustainability Commission.
