American St. Again 2-Way

The city announced today that American Street, which has been a one-way street the past nine months, has been restored to two-way traffic.

American runs between Lincoln and Seward Streets in downtown Sitka.

The city’s public service announcement today said, “A revision  to the traffic pattern on American Street has been modified from a one-way heading northbound to a two-way street. In May of 2022 the street was modified to a one-way heading northbound to preserve parking and assist with traffic flow. The modification was put in place until further notice.”

The Police and Fire Commission took public comment about the street at meetings held in November 2022 and on Jan. 25 this year. Businesses on the street said parking was not improved, and the one-way restriction was causing problems for them. The commission voted to recommended that the city restore it to two-way traffic.
