Security Benefits

SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium and Cynthia Gibson, CFP® an LPL Financial Advisor with Wayfinder Wealth, are inviting Sitkans to attend a joint presentation aimed at answering questions about Medicare and Social Security retirement benefits. 

The event is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at Centennial Hall and includes lunch.

‘‘It is common for people to be unsure of their Medicare options, the coverage they need, and when they should sign up to begin receiving Social Security benefits,’’ a press release from organizers said.

Susan Briles, a Certified Medicare Counselor with Patient Health Benefits at SEARHC will speak about Medicare options and avoiding the pitfalls and penalties that may surprise some. Cynthia Gibson, CFP® an LPL Financial Advisor with Wayfinder Wealth will speak about how to make the most of the Social Security benefits available.

Both will be available for questions following their presentations.

Board to Meet

The Sitka School District School Board will hold a special meeting in executive session for the superintendent’s evaluation 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 17, at the district office boardroom.

 

April 15 Open 

Gym Canceled

The City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation has canceled the previously advertised open skate and open gym activities on Saturday, April 15.

Health Networking

Meeting April 20

The Sitka Health Summit Coalition’s monthly Wooch.een (‘‘together’’ in Tlingit) health networking and learning meeting will be held noon-1 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at 1212 Seward Avenue in the first floor conference room.

The purpose of the meeting is to spark partnerships and to promote cross sector collaboration, learning, and networking to improve the well-being in Sitka. For information go to sitkahealthsummit.org or contact Amanda Roberts at amandar@searhc.org.

 

Artist to Talk About

Justice Story Quilts

Mimi Goodwin, former Sitka resident, will have an artist talk on her Justice Story Quilts 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at  the United Methodist Church.

Her award-winning pieces have traveled nationally. The ‘‘We Rise Up Over And Around All Fences’’ quilt is published in ‘‘We Are The Story: A Visual Response To Racism.’’

Her quilt, titled ‘‘Ukraine Is On Fire,’’ which won best in show at this year’s Seeing God Exhibition in St. Paul, Minnesota, will be one of the quilts shown.

Goodwin will share a collection of Justice Story Quilts. Participants will explore her creative process and have opportunity for community art-making.
