Quilters Meet

Ocean Wave Quilters will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at United Methodist Church.

Monthly meetings, September through June, are open to all, members or not. Those wishing to pay the $25 dues receive a monthly newsletter, discounts on classes and other benefits. For information call President Sarah Jordan at 907-738-7272.

 

Open Sewing

Session May 6

Ocean Wave Quilters will sponsor an open sewing session 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at United Methodist Church.

All are invited to attend. Irons, ironing boards, tables and chairs are provided. Lunch is a potluck.

Life Celebration

For Tiffany Martin

A celebration of life for Tiffany Jai (Davenport) Martin will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Halibut Point Recreation Area main shelter.

It will be potluck style, and dishes are welcome.

 

New Extension

Director to Visit

Judy Anderson, new director of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension, will be in Sitka next week. 

She will hold an in-person coffee hour “listening session” with interested community members, 8-10 a.m. Friday, April 28, at the Back Door coffee shop.

Monthly Grind

Events Planned

Sitka Monthly Grind producers have made plans for the 29th Sitka Monthly Grind season. 

The group decided on themes, dates and help needed.

The shows will be: Variety Show, Oct. 21 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi; WhaleFest Grind, Nov. 3 at the Centennial Hall; John Denver Grind, Dec. 9 at Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi; ’80s Grind, Jan. 13 at Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi; Fiddle Grind, Feb. 3, Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi; and the Original Artist Grind, March 9, Sitka Performing Arts Center.

Volunteers needed include: performers, strong backs to move equipment, help running the shows, help promoting the shows, and any other interests Sitkans have to help out during the 29th season, organizers said.

Grinds will continue its philosophy of: family-oriented, affordable, $5 for everyone, and non-political. Those with questions can call Jeff at 747 4821 or email jbudd3500@gmail.com. 

 

Bereavement

Retreat Planned

Brave Heart Volunteers will hold an Altered Heart Bereavement Retreat 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 20.

‘‘Take the day to retreat into a safe space and spend time with others who are also experiencing grief,’’ BHV said.

Intertidal Cruise

Tickets on Sale

The public is invited to join Sitka Conservation Society staff as they travel to Starfish Beach and explore the tide pools during minus tide.

The cruise will be 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Crescent Harbor. Boarding begins at 8:15 a.m.

Participants will be disembarking from the boat, so should take or wear weather-appropriate clothing.

Tickets are $60 per person and are available for purchase at Old Harbor Books with cash or check. Space is limited. Personal water and snacks should be taken. Masks are not required.

Drill Conductor

Classes in Sitka

AMSEA will conduct a fishing vessel drill conductor class 8 a.m.-7 p.m. May 12 at the NSRAA building, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.

The cost is $125 for commercial fishermen and $225 for all others. It meets the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels. Register online at www.amsea.org or call (907) 747-3287.

The class will cover cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, signal flares, and mayday calls; man-overboard recovery; firefighting; flooding and damage control; dewatering pumps, immersion suits and PFDs; helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures; and emergency drills. AMSEA’s fishing vessel drill conductor workshops meet the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels.

The class is an opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea. AMSEA is offering this class at a reduced cost to commercial fishermen with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, and AMSEA members.

 

Mariner’s First Aid,

CPR Class in Sitka

Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a Mariner’s First Aid and CPR/AED class 8 a.m.-3 p.m. May 11 at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road.

Attendees will receive the U.S. Coast Guard-accepted two-year first aid and CPR certification from the American Safety & Health Institute.

The class will cover CPR and automatic external defibrillators; treatment of choking; medical emergencies; trauma; environmental hazards; patient assessment; medical communications; drowning and hypothermia; and common fishing injuries.

The cost for the class is $125, including sales tax. Mariners may register online at www.amsea.org or call (907) 747-3287.
