Celebration
Set April 22
The 51st Earth Day celebration will be held 5 p.m. Thursday, April 22, on the SJ Campus.
The theme is ‘‘Restore Our Earth.’’ Community group tables and activities will open at 4:30 p.m. The event will be 5-6 p.m. and attendees are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
The event is supported by Youth for Sustainable Futures, Sitka Conservation Society, Mt. Edgecumbe Environmental Club, Citizen’s Climate Lobby-Sitka Chapter, Sitka Counseling/the HOPE Coalition, Sitka Rotary Club, Sitka350, Sitka Carbon Offset Fund, and the Sitka Health Summit Coalition.
Sitka’s Economy
Presentation Set
Sitka Economic Development Association will host the State of Sitka’s Economy 2 p.m. April 22 at the auditorium at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
Jim Calvin of the McKinley Research Group will present Sitka’s economic indicators and the effect of COVID-19 on the economy. The public is being encouraged to attend to learn about the trends of Sitka’s economy.

Ukulele Concert
Set for April 22
Baranof’s ukulele concert will be Thursday, April 22, in the Baranof Elementary School parking lot, across from Market Center.
Scheduled performances are: Hanna McCarty’s class at 9:05 a.m.; Sarah Eddy’s class at 9:25 a.m.; Nicole Riggs’ class at 9:55 a.m.; Cindy Conforti’s class at 10:30 a.m.; and Linda Fredrickson’s class at 11:10 a.m.
The concert is a drive-by event and all COVID precautions are appreciated, the school said. Walkersby are asked to maintain 10-plus feet distance and to continue walking past.
USFS to Close
Artesian Well
The artesian well, located inside the Starrigavan Recreation area, will be closed for testing beginning April 26.
The USDA Forest Service is investigating what might be causing the low water-flow rates.
A camera will be sent down the well pipe, then a test will be done to ensure the safety of the water. When results of the water test come back clean, the well will be re-opened to the public. Results are expected by April 29.

SJ Museum
Exhibition
Slated to Close
The Sheldon Jackson Museum invites the public to see the exhibition Tradition Innovation through Saturday, April 24.
The temporary exhibition of works by Peter Williams (Yup’ik) will be on view and the public can visit both the exhibition and the permanent gallery between noon and 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
For those far from Sitka and those preferring virtual access, images of Williams’ works, including garments, hunting and sewing equipment, and environmental-based art, a copy of Williams’ artist statement, and a video recording of his Jan. 16 opening reception artist talk, may be seen online at: https://lam.alaska.gov/peter-williams.
The proposal for the exhibition was selected by a panel from more than a dozen applications. The next Solo Show Exhibition Series is to be in 2022. Images of the exhibition will be posted on the Alaska State Museum website in the online exhibitions section for viewing.

To Lead Discussion
Sitka Sound Science Center’s scientist in residency fellow Max Izenberg will discuss social science and how it informs natural resource work at virtual brown bag lunch events at noon on April 28 and May 5.
