Piano, Violin

Concert Sept. 4

Sitka Fine Arts Camp will present a piano and violin concert with Milwaukee-based musicians Joseph Hauer and Michael McCarthy 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

The concert will feature works by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Ravel. Tickets are $20 at www.fineartscamp.org/shows. Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination is required for guests ages 12 and older. All patrons must be masked at all times while in the Performing Arts Center, the organizers said.

 

School Board

Meeting Aug. 18

Sitka School Board will meet 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at Centennial Hall.

 

Monthly Grind

Schedule Given

Producers have announced the 27th season of the Sitka Monthly Grind, and listed themes.

The philosophy will remain family oriented, affordable and non-political. This season many of the shows will be at Harrigan Centennial Hall, with a few exceptions. Shows will begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Dessert contests will be re-introduced later in the season, organizers said.

Social distancing will be required. People may sit in their family “pods” and masks will be required. Attendees may take their own snacks for immediate family consumption. Coffee and hot water for tea and hot chocolate will be provided. Tickets will be available at Old Harbor Books.

The dates and themes for this year are:

Oct. 9, virtual ‘‘Art in the Cave’’ Grind.

Nov. 6, Sitka Sound Science Center and the Sitka Monthly Grind host the annual Whalefest Maritime Grind at 7 p.m.

Dec. 18 (Sunday), Sitka Monthly Pre-Holiday Grind.

Jan. 22, Old and New Grind. 

Feb. 12, Annual Fiddle Grind. 

March 19, the Annual Artists Grind at the Performing Arts Center.

National Park

Trails Closed

Sitka National Historical Park has reopened the Totem Trail during daylight hours while the Riverview Trail and Russian Memorial Loop Trail remain closed at all times due to frequent bear activity.

Park staff continues to monitor bear activity and additional daytime trail closures may be in effect when needed. Closures and advisories are posted at trail heads and junctions.

Daytime trail users are being encouraged to be alert, make noise in areas of limited visibility, and avoid areas that have recent signs of bear activity (tracks, scat, or active fishing). For additional information visit the park’s web page or call 747-0110.
