Coho Being Rounded Up For

‘Fish to Schools’ Lunches

The Annual Fish to Schools Coho Donation Drive began Aug. 19, and will run through Sept. 5.

Fish to Schools brings locally-caught seafood lunches and salmon-focused classroom curricula into schools, Sitka Conservation Society said in a press release.

The program’s mission is to deepen youths’ understanding of local seafood resources and teach children that salmon require respect in both harvest and habitat. For nine years, the program has worked to lay the groundwork on how fishing works and inspire students to support or become involved in the industry.

Since 2010, the Fish to Schools program has been a partner-rich endeavor. Sitka Sound Seafoods, Seafood Producers Cooperative, Sitka School District, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, the SEER School, Head Start – in particular the cafeteria teams at those facilities – Lexi Fish and Beth Short Rhodes have all been key players in realizing the initiative.

The program also would not be possible without strong support from local fishermen who donate their catches to the program, nourishing students with the Omega-3s and other vitamins wild salmon provide.

Fishermen can tell scale operators how many fish they would like to donate as they offload at Seafood Producers Cooperative or Sitka Sound Seafoods. If fishermen have yelloweye overage, they can donate them to Fish to Schools as well.

To donate to Fish to Schools, contact the Sitka Conservation Society at 747-7509.
