Memorial Sept. 10

A memorial and celebration of life service for Victor ‘‘Vick’’ Johnson, a former Sitkan, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.

 

Mr. Johnson died Jan. 31 at age 87 at his home in Juneau. He was born Sept. 14, 1934, in Muskegon, Michigan.

 

Sawmill Creek Rd.

Project Updated:

The Sawmill Creek Road Resurfacing and Pedestrian Improvements project website has been updated with the following information for this week:

–Installation of the underground drainage system will continue between the roundabout and Hollywood Way. Afterward, there will be curb, gutter, and sidewalk work in this area.

–From Hollywood Way to Monastery Street, curb, gutter, and sidewalk will be removed and underground storm drain installation will begin.

–Curb, gutter, and sidewalk removal also will occur from Monastery Street to Baranof Street, followed by underground storm drain installation.

–Curb, gutter, and sidewalk installation will continue from Degroff Street to the Cemetery on the mountain side of the road.

–No work is planned for Labor Day weekend, Friday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 5.

–As a reminder for displaced residents, designated parking from Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., will be in the city lot off of Baranof Street.

Reminder of the following bus stops relocated on Sawmill Creek Road:

–The Biorka Street bus stop has been relocated to the entrance of the recycling center on Sawmill Creek Road (about 80 feet past the end-of-project location around Jeff Davis Street).

–The Baranof Street bus stop has been relocated to the corner of Degroff Street and Baranof Street. 

 

–The school year has started. The city lot on Baranof Street will be shared with school staff and residents.

 

Babies and Books

Program Listed 

Sitka Babies and Books and Sitka Public Library will offer a curbside program 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the library.

Call 747-4020 to register a child for the program and reserve a book and bag with supplies. This month’s theme is “sea creatures,” and participants will make their own stuffed animal. 

The story art program is designed for children ages 1 to 4 to spark imagination, creativity and lifelong connections with books.

Participants will receive a bag with a free book and supplies to work on a project focused on the book’s theme. The program is made possible by a grant from Sitka Legacy Foundation, an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation. For information contact Maite at 747-4022. 

 

WhaleFest Run

Slated Nov. 5

Runners and walkers are being reminded to start training for the run to be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, as part of Sitka WhaleFest.

The 5K, 10K and 2-mile fun walk will start at 9 a.m. at Whale Park. Registration on day of the event at 8 a.m., or pre-register at http://sitkawhalefest.org/ or at the registration table at WhaleFest. The cost is $20 and that includes merchandise from Sitka Sound Science Center.

Officers Sought

Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 is accepting nominations of officers.

A meeting will be held 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, to announce nominations.

ANB members in good standing can run for president, vice president, secretary, sergeant at arms or treasurer.

 

Woman’s Club

Meets Sept. 10

Sitka Woman’s Club will meet noon Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Bayview Pub.
